Important Books and Publications
- March 1 – The famous writer Michel de Montaigne finished the introduction to his most important book, called Essays. This book was published later in the same year.
- June 25 – A collection of important documents for the Lutheran church, known as the Book of Concord, was published.
- July 12 – The Ostrog Bible was published. This was the first complete Bible ever printed in a Slavic language.
New Cities and Explorations
- June 11 – Juan de Garay officially founded the city of Buenos Aires. Today, this is the capital city of Argentina.
- September 26 – The famous English explorer Sir Francis Drake completed his journey around the world. He was the first Englishman to do so.
- Yermak, a Cossack leader, entered Siberia with his group of 1,636 men. This marked the beginning of Russia's conquest of Siberia.
Political Changes and Meetings
- From 1580 to 1764, the first meeting of the Jewish Waad (also known as the Sejm of Four Countries) took place in Lublin, Poland. About 70 leaders from Jewish communities met to talk about taxes and other important issues for their people.
- Portugal lost its independence to Spain. This happened after King Henry of Portugal died without any children to take his place. Spain's rule over Portugal would last until 1640.
