Key Events of 1579
New Unions in the Netherlands
In 1579, two important agreements were signed in the Netherlands. These agreements divided the region and set the stage for future conflicts and the creation of new states.
The Union of Arras
On January 6, the Union of Arras was formed. This agreement brought together the southern parts of the Netherlands. These areas decided to stay loyal to King Philip II of Spain. The Duke of Parma was their governor, representing the king.
The Union of Utrecht
Just a few weeks later, on January 23, the northern parts of the Netherlands formed their own group called the Union of Utrecht. This union created a new confederation, which was like a loose alliance of states. It was known as the United Provinces. William I of Orange became their leader, called the Stadtholder. They also invited the Duke of Anjou, who was the younger brother of King Henry III of France, to become their ruler.
Spanish Capture of Maastricht
In March of 1579, the city of Maastricht was captured by the Spanish army. This happened under the command of the Duke of Parma. This event was a key moment in the ongoing conflict between Spain and the Dutch provinces.
Sir Francis Drake's Voyage
On June 17, the famous English explorer Sir Francis Drake landed in what is now California. He was on his journey around the world, known as a circumnavigation. Drake claimed this new land for Queen Elizabeth I of England.
He named the area "Nova Albion," which means "New England." This claim, along with England's claim in Newfoundland, became very important. It helped England claim all the land from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean in North America. Future maps would show all lands north of New Spain and New Mexico under this new name.
