Azizan bin Abdul Razak (born October 25, 1944 – died September 26, 2013) was an important Malaysian politician. He served as the 10th Menteri Besar of the state of Kedah from 2008 to 2013. The Menteri Besar is like the Chief Minister or head of government for a Malaysian state.
Azizan was a member of the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS). He made history by becoming the first Chief Minister of Kedah who was not from the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) party. He represented the area of Sungai Limau in the Kedah state assembly from 2004 until he passed away in 2013. He was also a leader for his party, PAS, in Kedah.

What Was Azizan Abdul Razak's Political Career Like?
Azizan first became a member of the Kedah State Assembly in 2004. He represented the area called Sungai Limau. In 2008, his party, Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS), won the state election in Kedah. They formed a government with other parties like the People's Justice Party (PKR) and the Democratic Action Party (DAP).
Because Azizan was the leader of PAS in Kedah, he became the Chief Minister. This was a big moment because it ended many decades of UMNO party rule in Kedah. On July 16, 2008, he received a special award called the Darjah Seri Paduka Mahkota Kedah (SPMK). This award came with the title "Datuk Seri." The Sultan of Kedah, Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah, gave him this award during the Sultan's Golden Jubilee celebration.
Azizan's time as Chief Minister ended after the 2013 election. In that election, the UMNO party, led by Mukhriz Mahathir, won enough seats to form the new government in Kedah.

Azizan had 14 children from two marriages. He was a very educated person. He studied at two well-known universities: Al-Azhar University and the University of Kent. He also used to be in charge of the Islamic law department at the National University of Malaysia. He could speak many languages, including Malay, English, Tagalog, and Arabic.
When Did Azizan Abdul Razak Pass Away?
Azizan passed away on September 26, 2013. He was 68 years old. He died at the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in the intensive care unit because his health had become very weak.
