Al-Azhar University is a very old and important university and mosque located in Cairo, Egypt. It is a major center for learning about the Arabic language and Islamic studies, especially for Sunni Muslims around the world. It is also known as the second-oldest university that is still open and teaching today!

A Look at Al-Azhar's Long History
Al-Azhar University was founded a very long time ago, in 975 AD. This makes it over 1,000 years old!
How it Started
It was first built by a group called the Fatimids. They followed a branch of Islam known as Shia tradition. When it first opened, Al-Azhar was a place for both religious study and a mosque for prayer.
A Change in Focus
