The Start of the American Revolution
In 1775, tensions between Great Britain and its American colonies reached a breaking point. The colonists were unhappy with British rule and taxes. This led to fighting and a desire for independence.
Battles of Lexington and Concord
The first shots of the American Revolutionary War were fired on April 19, 1775. This happened in Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts. British soldiers marched to seize colonial military supplies. However, American militiamen, known as "Minutemen," stood their ground. The fighting that day marked the true beginning of the war.
The Battle of Bunker Hill
Just a few months later, on June 17, 1775, another major battle took place. This was the Battle of Bunker Hill near Boston. Even though the British won this battle, the American colonists showed great bravery. They proved they could stand up to the powerful British army. This battle gave the Americans confidence.

The Continental Congresses
In May 1775, the First Continental Congress met. This was a meeting of delegates from the American colonies. They discussed how to respond to British actions. Soon after, the Second Continental Congress also gathered. This group acted as the first government of the United States during the war. They made important decisions, like creating the Continental Army.
