- 2009 – A Presidential Election is held in Iran. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad claims victory over Mir-Hossein Mousavi, in a disputed result. Soon after, protests begin in Tehran against his rule, following the controversial outcome of the election.
- 2013 - Jiroemon Kimura dies in Japan. At the age of 116 years, 53 days, he is recognized as the oldest man ever, and the last-surviving man to have been born in the 19th century.
- 2013 - The government of Greece shuts down the national broadcaster for a previously undetermined amount of time.
- 2014 - The 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, the 20th edition of the tournament, begins. In the opening game, the Brazil national football team comes from behind to beat the Croatia national football team 3-1.
- 2015 - The first European Games begin in Baku, Azerbaijan, lasting until June 28.
- 2016 - Pittsburgh Penguins win the Stanley Cup by beating the San Jose Sharks 3-1 and winning the series 4-2.
