Political Changes and Royal Affairs

  • January 17 – In Denmark, a powerful figure named Johann Friedrich Struensee and Queen Caroline Matilda were arrested. This event led to the Queen being sent away from Denmark.
  • The territory of Baden-Baden became part of the land ruled by the Margrave of Baden-Durlach. This created a larger area known as Baden.
  • Emperor Go-Momozono became the new ruler of Japan.
  • The right to control all trade with Iceland was given to the Danish crown. This meant the Danish government had a special power over Iceland's trade.

Explorations and New Discoveries

  • July 17 – During an Arctic journey, the Chipewyan chief Matonabbee, who was guiding explorer Samuel Hearne, was involved in a conflict with a group of Inuit people at a place called Bloody Falls.
  • September 8 – In what is now California, two priests, Fathers Pedro Cambon and Angel Somera, established Mission San Gabriel Arcangel. This mission was an important settlement for the Spanish in the region.

  • October 9 – A Dutch merchant ship named Vrouw Maria sank near the coast of Finland. Luckily, the captain and his crew were able to escape safely.
  • November 16 – The River Tyne in England flooded during the night. This powerful flood destroyed many bridges and sadly caused the deaths of several people. The main bridge in Newcastle upon Tyne was not rebuilt until 1781.
  • A serious outbreak of illness, known as the Plague, affected Moscow.
