Who Was Ernest Augustus?
Ernest Augustus was born on June 5, 1771. He was one of many children of King George III. As a young prince, he was part of the royal family in Britain.
Becoming a King
When his brother, King William IV, died in 1837, something interesting happened. In Britain, the crown went to William's niece, Queen Victoria. But in Hanover, a different rule applied. Women could not inherit the throne if there was a male heir. Because of this rule, Ernest Augustus, as the next oldest male in the family, became the King of Hanover. This meant that the crowns of Britain and Hanover were separated after more than a century.
Life as a King
As King of Hanover, Ernest Augustus ruled his kingdom in Germany. He was involved in the politics and daily life of his country. He passed away on November 18, 1851. His son, George V, then became the new King of Hanover.
