- 1066 – William the Conqueror and his army sailed from the Somme river. This was the start of the Norman conquest of England, a huge change for England.
- 1331 – The Battle of Płowce happened between Poland and the Teutonic Order. The Polish army lost, but their leaders got away safely.
- 1422 – The Treaty of Melno was signed by the Teutonic Knights, Poland, and Lithuania. This ended the short Gollub War.
- 1529 – The Siege of Vienna began. Suleiman I attacked the city.
- 1540 – The Society of Jesus, also known as the Jesuits, officially started. Pope Paul III gave them their charter.
- 1590 – Pope Urban VII died. He was Pope for only 13 days, making it the shortest time anyone has ever been Pope.

- 1605 – The Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth defeated the Swedish armies. This happened in the Battle of Kircholm.

- 1777 – During the American Revolution, Lancaster, Pennsylvania became the capital of the United States. It was the capital for just one day. This happened after Congress left Philadelphia.
- 1791 – The National Assembly of France voted to give full citizenship to Jewish people.
- 1821 – The Army of the Three Guarantees entered Mexico City in triumph. They were led by Agustín de Iturbide. Mexico was declared independent the next day.
