The year 1529 was a time of big changes around the world. Important agreements were made between powerful countries, and some major battles took place. New cities were founded, and scientists made new discoveries. Let's explore some of the key events that shaped this year.

Major World Events

Important Treaties and Agreements

On April 22, a very important agreement called the Treaty of Zaragoza was signed. This treaty helped to divide the eastern part of the world between two powerful countries, Spain and Portugal. They drew a line to decide which parts of the world each country could explore and claim, especially around the valuable Moluccas (also known as the Spice Islands).

Later, on August 5, another big agreement was made. This was the Treaty of Cambrai, sometimes called the "Ladies' Peace." It was signed by Francis I of France, the King of France, and Emperor Charles V, who ruled a large empire. This treaty helped to end some of the fighting between their countries. King Francis gave up his claims to land in Italy, but he was allowed to keep control of Burgundy.

Battles and Sieges

In March, a significant battle happened in Africa called the Battle of Shimbra Kure. Imam Ahmad ibn Ibrahim al-Ghazi, a leader with a small army, defeated the army of Lebna Dengel, who was the Emperor of Ethiopia. This battle was important because Imam Ahmad's forces used new weapons called matchlocks, which were early types of guns.

In Europe, the powerful Turkish army, led by Suleiman I, began another invasion of Hungary on May 10. Their goal was to expand their empire. By September 8, they successfully took back the city of Buda.

The Turkish army then moved on to a very important city: Vienna. On September 23, they started a big attack known as the Siege of Vienna. A siege is when an army surrounds a city to try and take it over. However, the people of Vienna fought bravely. As the weather got colder and the season grew late, Suleiman decided to stop the siege on October 15. The Turkish army left Vienna without taking it.

New Beginnings and Changes

On September 8, a new city was founded in Venezuela. This city was Maracaibo, and it was started by a person named Ambrosius Ehinger.

In England, King Henry VIII was trying to get a divorce, but his chief advisor, Thomas Wolsey, could not make it happen. Because of this, Thomas Wolsey had to resign from his important job as Archbishop of York. Also, King Henry VIII made Aylesbury the main town, or county town, of Buckinghamshire in England.

In Transylvania, a region in Europe, Stephen Báthory became the new governor. A governor is like a leader or ruler of a region.

In the Ayutthaya Kingdom in Southeast Asia, Boromrajathira IV became the new king, taking over from Rama Thibodi II.

Discoveries and Arts

The element Fluorine was first described by a scientist named Georg Agricola in 1529. This was an early step in understanding this important chemical element.

In the world of art, Giorgio Vasari, who would later become a famous artist and writer, visited Rome. Rome was a very important center for art and culture at that time.

A religious leader named Heinrich Bullinger became a pastor in the town of Bremgarten.

The Diet of Speyer also took place in 1529. A "Diet" was a formal meeting or assembly, often for political or religious discussions. This meeting was important for the history of the Protestant Reformation.
