- 1358 – The Republic of Ragusa (now Dubrovnik, Croatia) was started. It was an important trading city.
- 1497 – Cornish leaders Michael An Gof and Thomas Flamank died in London, England, after leading a rebellion.
- 1499 – Explorer Amerigo Vespucci saw the land that is now Amapá State in Brazil for the first time.
- 1556 – Thirteen people known as the Stratford Martyrs died near London because of their Protestant beliefs.

- 1743 – During the Battle of Dettingen, King George II became the last British king to fight in a battle himself.
- 1760 – In the Anglo-Cherokee War, Cherokee fighters won against British soldiers at the Battle of Echoee in North Carolina.
- 1806 – British forces took control of Buenos Aires in Argentina during their first attempt to invade the River Plate area.
- 1864 – During the American Civil War, Confederate soldiers defeated Union forces at the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain in Georgia.
- 1895 – The first passenger train in the U.S. to use electric engines, the Royal Blue, made its first trip from Washington, D.C., to New York City.
- 1898 – Joshua Slocum finished the first ever solo trip around the world by boat. He started and ended his journey in Nova Scotia, Canada.
