- 410 – The city of Guanggu, capital of the Southern Yan kingdom, was captured by the Jin dynasty general Liu Yu. This ended the Southern Yan dynasty.
- 421 – The famous Italian city of Venice was founded. Its first church, San Giacomo di Rialto, was dedicated on the islet of Rialto.
- 708 – Pope Constantine became the 88th pope. He was the last pope to visit Constantinople for a very long time, until 1967.
- 717 – Theodosius III stepped down as emperor of the Byzantine Empire to join the clergy. This allowed Leo III to become emperor and start a new ruling family.
- 919 – Romanos Lekapenos took control of the Boukoleon Palace in Constantinople. He became the regent, or temporary ruler, for the young Byzantine emperor Constantine VII.
- 1000 – The Fatimid ruler al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah took full control of the government after his chief minister passed away.
- 1065 – The Great German Pilgrimage, a journey by many people, was attacked by bandits.
- 1306 – Robert the Bruce became the King of Scots in Scotland.
