Roberts Scott Blossom (born March 25, 1924 – died July 8, 2011) was an American actor and poet. He was famous for playing different kinds of characters in plays, movies, and TV shows. Many people remember him as Old Man Marley in the popular movie Home Alone (1990). He also played Ezra Cobb in the movie Deranged (1974).
Roberts Blossom was also in other well-known movies. These include The Great Gatsby (1974), Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), and Escape from Alcatraz (1979). He also appeared in Christine (1983) and The Last Temptation of Christ (1988).
Early Life and Education
Roberts Scott Blossom was born on March 25, 1924, in New Haven, Connecticut. His father, John Blossom, was a sports director at Yale University. Roberts grew up in Cleveland and later moved to Shaker Heights, Ohio.
He went to Hawken School and then graduated from Asheville School in 1941. He studied at Harvard University for one year. After that, he joined the United States Army and served in World War II in Europe. When he returned, he first trained as a therapist. But soon, he decided he wanted to be an actor.
Blossom started acting and directing plays in Cleveland. He worked at places like Karamu House. Later, he moved to New York City to pursue acting full-time. To support himself, he took on various jobs before becoming a full-time actor.
Acting Career
Roberts Blossom started his acting career on stage in the 1950s. He won three Obie Awards for his great performances in plays. These awards were for Village Wooing (1955), Do Not Pass Go (1965), and The Ice Age (1976). In the 1960s, he even started his own theater group called Filmstage. He also performed in plays on Broadway, which is a very famous theater district.
Blossom began acting in movies and TV shows in 1958. His first movie role was in The Hospital in 1971. In the 1970s, he appeared in several important films. He was in The Great Gatsby (1974) with Robert Redford. He also worked with famous director Steven Spielberg in Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977). Another memorable role was in Escape from Alcatraz (1979) alongside Clint Eastwood.
One of his most talked-about roles was Ezra Cobb in the 1974 movie Deranged. He also starred in the 1983 horror movie Christine, which was directed by John Carpenter and based on a book by Stephen King.
However, Roberts Blossom is best known for his role as Old Man Marley in the 1990 hit movie Home Alone. In this film, he played a kind neighbor who helps Macaulay Culkin's character. His last movie role was in The Quick and The Dead (1995), where he acted with Sharon Stone and Leonardo DiCaprio. He also appeared in movies like Doc Hollywood (1991) with Michael J. Fox.
On television, Blossom first appeared in the series Naked City in 1958. From 1976 to 1978, he was on the soap opera Another World. For this role, he won an award for Best Villain. He also had roles in popular TV shows like Moonlighting, Tales from the Darkside, and The Twilight Zone. His final acting role was in the TV movie Balloon Farm in 1999.
In 2000, a documentary called Full Blossom: The Life of Poet/Actor Roberts Blossom was made. In this film, he shared stories about his life as an actor and a poet.
Personal Life
Roberts Blossom was married twice. He had a son named Michael with his first wife, Beverly Schmidt Blossom. Later, he married Marylin Orshan Blossom, and they had a daughter named Deborah. Marylin passed away in 1982.
After he stopped acting in the late 1990s, Roberts Blossom moved to Berkeley, California. He spent his time writing poetry, which he loved. He later moved to Santa Monica, California, where he lived until his death.
Death
Roberts Blossom passed away on July 8, 2011, at the age of 87. He died from a condition affecting the blood vessels in his brain. At the time of his death, he was living in a nursing home.
