Sharon Vonne Stone (born March 10, 1958) is an American actress and producer. She is known for playing mysterious and powerful women in movies and on TV. In the 1990s, she became one of the most famous actresses in the world.
Stone has received many awards for her work. These include a Primetime Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award. She was also nominated for an Academy Award. In France, she was given the title of Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters in 2005 and later promoted to Commander in 2021 for her contributions to the arts.
Her career began with modeling in commercials before she started acting. Her first movie role was as an extra in Stardust Memories (1980). She later had roles in films like King Solomon's Mines (1985) and Action Jackson (1988). Her big break came with the science fiction movie Total Recall (1990).

Early Life
Sharon Vonne Stone was born on March 10, 1958, in Meadville, Pennsylvania. Her mother, Dorothy Marie, was an accountant, and her father, Joseph William Stone II, was a tool and die maker. She has three siblings.
Stone was a very bright child and started the second grade when she was only five years old. She has a reported IQ of 154, which is considered very high. When she was 14, she was badly injured when she fell off a horse.
She graduated from Saegertown High School in 1975. At age 15, she went to Edinboro State College with a scholarship for creative writing. However, she left college to move to New York City and become a fashion model. In 2016, inspired by Hillary Clinton, Stone returned to Edinboro University of Pennsylvania to finish her degree.
Career
Early Career and Modeling
While in college, Stone won the Miss Crawford County beauty pageant. A judge suggested she should move to New York City to become a model. In 1977, she signed with the Ford Modeling Agency. She worked in Europe for a while, living in Milan and Paris.
Eventually, she decided to become an actress. She moved back to New York and got a small part in Woody Allen's movie Stardust Memories (1980). She then had a speaking role in the horror film Deadly Blessing (1981).
Throughout the 1980s, she appeared in several TV shows, including Magnum, P.I. and T. J. Hooker. She also acted in movies like Irreconcilable Differences (1984) and King Solomon's Mines (1985).
Becoming a Star
Stone's career took a major step forward with the science fiction film Total Recall (1990), where she starred with Arnold Schwarzenegger. The movie was a huge success and made her more famous.
In 1992, she starred in the thriller Basic Instinct. Her performance as the clever novelist Catherine Tramell made her an international star. Critics praised her acting, and she was nominated for a Golden Globe Award. The movie was one of the biggest box office hits of the 1990s.
Success in the 1990s
After Basic Instinct, Stone became a leading actress in Hollywood. In 1993, she starred in the thriller Sliver. In 1994, she appeared in The Specialist with Sylvester Stallone.
One of her most important roles was in Martin Scorsese's 1995 crime film Casino. She played Ginger McKenna, the wife of a casino boss played by Robert De Niro. Her performance was highly praised, and she won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama. She was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress.
In 1995, she also starred in and co-produced the Western film The Quick and the Dead. She even paid the salary for a young Leonardo DiCaprio to be in the movie. That same year, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Towards the end of the decade, she provided the voice for a character in the animated movie Antz (1998). She also earned another Golden Globe nomination for her role in the drama The Mighty (1998).
Later Work and Television
In 2001, Stone had a serious health problem, a brain hemorrhage, and took a break from acting to recover. She returned to the screen in 2003 with a guest role on the TV show The Practice. She won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series for her performance.
She later appeared in films like Broken Flowers (2005) and was part of the large cast in the drama Bobby (2006). Bobby was about the hours before the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy. The cast won an award at the Hollywood Film Festival.
In the 2010s, Stone continued to work in both movies and television. She had a guest role on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit in 2010. She also appeared in films like Lovelace (2013) and The Disaster Artist (2017).
From 2018, she starred in the HBO mystery series Mosaic, for which she received positive reviews. In 2020, she joined the cast of the Netflix series Ratched.
Personal Life
Stone is a follower of Buddhism. She became interested in the religion after actor Richard Gere introduced her to the Dalai Lama.
In 1984, she married producer Michael Greenburg. They divorced in 1990. In 1998, she married Phil Bronstein, an editor for the San Francisco Chronicle. They adopted a son in 2000. Stone and Bronstein divorced in 2004.
Stone later adopted two more sons, one in 2005 and another in 2006. As of 2018, she lives with her three sons in West Hollywood, California.
Activism
Stone is also known for her work as an activist. She has worked to raise awareness and money for people with HIV/AIDS. In 2006, she traveled to Israel to promote peace in the Middle East. For her charity work, she received the Peace Summit Award in 2013.
In 2015, at an event in Milan, Italy, she held a surprise auction. She raised enough money to build 28 schools in Africa.
