Sharon Vonne Stone (born March 10, 1958) is an American actress. She is well-known for her roles in many movies and TV shows, especially in the 1990s. She has won several important awards, including a Primetime Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award. She was also nominated for an Academy Award. In France, she was honored with the title "Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters" in 2005.

Sharon Stone started her career by modeling in TV commercials and print ads. Her first movie role was as an extra in Stardust Memories (1980). She then had her first speaking part in the horror film Deadly Blessing (1981). During the 1980s, she appeared in films like Irreconcilable Differences (1984), King Solomon's Mines (1985), and Above the Law (1988).

Sharon Vonne Stone was born on March 10, 1958. Her birthplace was Meadville, Pennsylvania. Her mother, Dorothy Marie, was an accountant. Her father, Joseph William Stone II, was a tool and die manufacturer. Sharon has three siblings: Michael, Kelly, and Patrick Joseph. Her family has some Irish background. She once shared that her Irish ancestors came to the United States during the Great Famine.

Sharon Stone was a very smart child. She reportedly has an IQ of 154. She started second grade when she was only five years old. At 14, she had a neck injury while training a horse. The animal bucked and charged towards a washing line.

She finished high school at Saegertown High School in Saegertown, Pennsylvania, in 1975. At 15, Stone was accepted into Edinboro State College. She received a scholarship for creative writing. However, she left college to move to New York City and become a fashion model. In 2016, she went back to Edinboro University of Pennsylvania to finish her degree.

While studying at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, Sharon Stone won the title of Miss Crawford County, Pennsylvania. In 1976, she was a candidate for Miss Pennsylvania. A judge at the pageant told her to leave college and move to New York City to become a fashion model. Stone followed this advice. She moved to New Jersey to live with an aunt. By 1977, she had signed with Ford Modeling Agency in New York City.

This movie greatly helped Stone's career. She was then cast in five movies released in 1991. These included the romantic comedy He Said, She Said and the psychological thriller Scissors.

In another Verhoeven film, the thriller Basic Instinct (1992), she played a character named Catherine Tramell. This role made her a big star. Critics praised her "star-making performance." For this part, Stone received a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Actress. The film was also a huge financial success, making US$352.9 million worldwide.

While she received another award from Women in Film for If These Walls Could Talk 2, Beautiful Jo was released on TV instead of in theaters.

In September 2001, Stone was hospitalized for a brain hemorrhage. She took a break from acting to recover. She felt that she had to "figure herself out all over again" after this. She returned to acting in 2003. She had a three-episode role as an attorney named Sheila Carlisle in The Practice. She took a leading female role in the French action sequel Largo Winch II (2011). She played a United Nations investigator. In 2012, she starred as a journalist in the thriller Border Run.

In 2013, Stone played in the biographical drama Lovelace. In 2014, she starred in the Italian dramedy A Golden Boy. She also played America's first female Vice President in the TNT series Agent X. This show only aired for one season. Stone played an adoptive mother in the drama Mothers and Daughters (2016). She was also in the action film Life on the Line (2016). Stone returned to television in 2018. She played a murdered children's book author in Steven Soderbergh's HBO mystery Mosaic. This was released as an interactive app and a TV drama. She received positive reviews for her performance. She won the Satellite Award for this role.

In Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story by Martin Scorsese (2019), Stone played an exaggerated version of herself. This film was released on Netflix. She worked with Soderbergh again for The Laundromat (2019). She played a realtor in this film, alongside Meryl Streep.

In Netflix's psychological thriller series Ratched (2020), Stone played a wealthy heiress. She hires a hit man to hurt a doctor. Stone found the character very interesting. Sharon Stone is a Tibetan Buddhist. She became interested in Buddhism after Richard Gere introduced her to the Dalai Lama. She has also stated that she believes in God. On September 29, 2001, Stone was hospitalized for a type of brain bleed. She recovered from this health challenge.

Relationships and Family

In 1984, Sharon Stone met TV producer Michael Greenburg. They met on the set of The Vegas Strip War, a TV film he produced and she starred in. They married the same year. They separated three years later and divorced in 1990.

Stone and comedian Garry Shandling were friends and dated briefly. She appeared on his show The Larry Sanders Show. They remained close friends until Shandling's death in 2016.

In 1993, Stone met filmmaker William J. MacDonald on the set of Sliver. They became engaged but separated one year later in 1994. While working on The Quick and the Dead in 1994, Stone met Bob Wagner, an assistant director, and they became engaged.

On February 14, 1998, Stone married Phil Bronstein, an editor for newspapers. Stone experienced several miscarriages and was unable to have biological children. They adopted a son, Roan Joseph Bronstein, in 2000. Bronstein filed for divorce in 2003, and it was finalized in 2004. A judge ruled that Roan would live mainly with Bronstein, and Stone would have visitation rights.

Stone adopted her second son, Laird Vonne, in 2005. She adopted her third son, Quinn Kelly Stone, in 2006. As of 2018, Stone lives with her three sons in West Hollywood, California. Their home was once owned by actor Montgomery Clift.

Activism and Charity Work

In March 2006, Stone traveled to Israel. She promoted peace in the Middle East with Nobel Peace Prize winner Shimon Peres. In 2013, she called Peres her "mentor." On October 23, 2013, Stone received the Peace Summit Award. This was for her work helping people with HIV/AIDS.

In 2015, Stone was a special guest at an award ceremony in Milan. She started an unplanned auction on stage. She raised enough money to build 28 schools in Africa.
