The McMuffin is a type of breakfast sandwich sold at the well-known fast food restaurant, McDonald's. The Egg McMuffin is the most famous sandwich in this group. It was created in 1972 by a man named Herb Peterson. He wanted it to be like a classic breakfast dish called eggs Benedict, which has English muffins, ham, eggs, and a special sauce.
What's in a McMuffin?
In places like the United States and Canada, the usual Egg McMuffin has a slice of Canadian bacon. It also includes a griddle-fried egg and a slice of American cheese. All of these ingredients are served on a toasted and buttered English muffin. The egg gets its perfectly round shape because it's cooked inside a special ring.
How the McMuffin Was Invented
The idea for the Egg McMuffin came to life in 1972. Ray Kroc, who used to be the president of McDonald's, wrote about how it started. Herb Peterson and his helper, Donald Greadel, ran a McDonald's restaurant in Santa Barbara, California. They asked Kroc to come see something new they had made.
Peterson didn't tell Kroc much about it at first, calling it "a crazy idea." It was a new kind of breakfast sandwich. This sandwich had an egg cooked in a special way, with the yolk broken. It also had a slice of cheese and a piece of grilled ham. It was served open on a toasted and buttered English muffin. The creation of the Egg McMuffin was a big deal for McDonald's. It opened up a whole new part of their business: serving breakfast.
The very first Egg McMuffin that McDonald's officially approved was served in 1972. This happened at a McDonald's restaurant in Belleville, New Jersey.
