Important Events of 1541
New Lands and Explorations
- On February 12, Pedro de Valdivia founded the city of Santiago de Chile. This city became very important in South America.
- On May 8, the explorer Hernando de Soto reached a huge river. He named it Rio de Espiritu Santo, which we now know as the Mississippi River.
- On May 23, Jacques Cartier left Saint-Malo, France. This was his third trip to explore new lands.
Big Changes in Power
- On August 29, the Janissaries, who were special soldiers of Suleiman the Magnificent, took control of Buda. They used a clever trick, pretending to be tourists.
- The Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent also sealed off The Golden Gate in Jerusalem.
- The Parliament of Ireland made a big decision. They declared Henry VIII of England the new King of Ireland. This changed the old system of the Lordship of Ireland into the Kingdom of Ireland.
- In October, Charles V of Spain led a military campaign against Algiers. However, this effort was not successful.
Other Key Moments
- The very first official translation of the entire Bible into the Swedish language was completed. This was a major event for people in Sweden.
- On July 9, Estevão da Gama left Massawa. He left behind 400 soldiers with special guns called matchlocks and 150 slaves. His brother, Christovão da Gama, was in charge. Their mission was to help the Emperor of Ethiopia fight against Ahmad ibn Ibrahim al-Ghazi, who had invaded the Emperor's land.
