Early History (Before 1600)
- In 708, the very first copper coins were made in Japan. This was a big step for their economy!
- The city of Melite (which is now part of Malta) was taken over by an army in 870. This ended the rule of the Byzantine Empire there.
- A large fire badly damaged Mainz Cathedral in 1009, right on the day it was supposed to open.
- The Battle of Fariskur took place in 1219 during the Fifth Crusade, a series of religious wars.
- In 1261, Pope Urban IV became the 182nd Pope, taking over from Pope Alexander IV.
- The army of Pisa won a big battle against the forces of Naples and Florence in 1315, even though they were outnumbered. This was called the Battle of Montecatini.
- In 1350, the English navy, led by King Edward III, defeated a large Spanish fleet in the Battle of Winchelsea.
- A short war between France and England ended with the Treaty of Picquigny in 1475.
- Pope Innocent VIII became Pope in 1484, following Pope Sixtus IV.
- The famous explorer Vasco da Gama decided to leave Calicut (in India) and head back to Portugal in 1498.
- In 1521, the Ottoman Turks captured Belgrade, an important city.
- The Battle of Mohács in 1526 was a major victory for the Ottoman Turks, led by Suleiman the Magnificent. They defeated the Hungarian and Bohemian armies.
- The Ottoman Turks also captured Buda, the capital of the Hungarian Kingdom, in 1541.
- In 1588, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, a powerful leader in Japan, ordered that all peasants had to give up their swords. This helped to keep the peace and separate the samurai (warrior class) from common people.

- The city of Nuuk in Greenland was founded in 1728 as a fort called Godt-Haab.
- A huge tsunami (a giant ocean wave) hit the Japanese coast in 1741 after a volcano erupted. At least 2,000 people drowned.
- Frederick the Great attacked Saxony in 1756, which marked the start of the Seven Years' War in Europe.
- In 1758, the Treaty of Easton created the first Indian reservation in America for the Lenape people.
- During the American Revolutionary War, British and American forces fought in the Battle of Rhode Island in 1778, but neither side won clearly.
- American forces defeated the British and Iroquois at the Battle of Newtown in 1779.
- Shays' Rebellion, an uprising of farmers in Massachusetts, began in 1786 because people were struggling with high debts and taxes.
- British troops, led by Arthur Wellesley, defeated a Danish army outside Copenhagen in 1807.
- In 1825, Portugal officially recognized Brazil's independence with the signing of the Treaty of Rio de Janeiro.

- Ishi, believed to be the last Native American to live completely separate from modern society, came out of the wilderness in California in 1911.
- Also in 1911, the Canadian Naval Service became the Royal Canadian Navy.
- A terrible typhoon hit China in 1912, causing at least 50,000 deaths.
- World War I began for France in 1914 with the Battle of St. Quentin.
- US Navy divers successfully raised the submarine F-4 in 1915, which was the first U.S. submarine to sink in an accident.
