Church and Politics
- The First Council of the Lateran was a very important meeting of church leaders in Rome. At this meeting, they officially agreed with the Concordat of Worms. This was a peace deal that helped decide who had the power to choose important church leaders, like bishops – the Church or the kings. The Council also made a rule that priests should remain celibate, meaning they should not get married.
- In the Middle East, a special agreement called the Pactum Warmundi was made. This deal was between the Republic of Venice, a powerful trading city, and the Kingdom of Jerusalem, which was a state set up by Crusaders. This agreement gave Venice special trading rights and other benefits in the Kingdom of Jerusalem.

- In Japan, Emperor Toba finished his time as the ruler. He had been a very important emperor.

- Minamoto no Yoshitomo was born in Japan. He later became a famous general.

- On August 29, Eystein I of Norway passed away. He was a king of Norway.
- Wanyan Aguda, a powerful leader of the Jurchen Wanyan tribe, also died this year. He was very important in the history of China.
