Hugh I (born in 1057, died August 29, 1093) was a Duke of Burgundy from 1076 to 1079. He was the son of Henry of Burgundy. His grandfather was Duke Robert I. Hugh became duke after his father, Henry, died too young.
However, Hugh did not stay duke for long. He decided to give up his title and become a monk. He passed the duchy to his brother, Odo I. Hugh then joined the Abbey of Cluny, a famous monastery.
A Duke Becomes a Monk
Hugh's decision to become a monk was a big change. He entered the Cluny Abbey in 1079. This happened after he was hurt in a battle. Two other important people, Guy I of Mâcon and Guigues II of Albon, also became monks around the same time.
Fighting in Spain
Before becoming a monk, Hugh briefly fought against the Moors in the Iberian Peninsula. The Moors were Muslim people who lived in parts of Spain. Hugh fought alongside Sancho of Aragón, a king from a region in Spain.
Pope Gregory's Concerns
Hugh's choice to become a monk drew some criticism. Pope Gregory VII was not happy about it. The Pope thought Hugh should have made sure the Duchy of Burgundy was peaceful first. He worried that Hugh's leaving might put many Christians in danger.
Life as a Prior
Despite the Pope's concerns, Hugh took his vows as a monk. Later, he became the prior of the Benedictine Abbey of Cluny. A prior is a leader in a monastery, similar to an abbot.
