Robert I (born 1011 – died March 21, 1076) was known as Robert the Old. He was also called "the Headstrong" because of his strong will. Robert was the Duke of Burgundy from 1032 until he died.
He was the son of King Robert II of France and Constance of Arles. His brother was Henry I of France.
Life as Duke of Burgundy
In 1025, Robert and his brother Henry had a disagreement with their father, the King. They fought against him and made him go back to Paris.
After his father died in 1031, Robert had another disagreement, this time with his brother Henry. Their mother, Constance of Arles, supported Robert. They finally made peace in 1032. As part of this peace, Robert was given control of Burgundy.
During his time as Duke, Robert often struggled to control the nobles who served him. He sometimes took things from their lands, even from Church properties. For example, he took money from the diocese of Autun and wine from the religious leaders in Dijon. He also took items from the abbey of St-Germain at Auxerre.
In 1048, Robert ended his marriage to his first wife, Helie of Semur. Around the same time, the bishop of Langres did not want to work with the Duke.
Robert had two sons who were supposed to take over after him. His first son, Hugh, died young in a battle. His second son, Henry, also passed away before Robert did. Because of this, Robert's grandson, Hugh I, became the next Duke of Burgundy. Hugh I was Henry's oldest son.
Family and Children
Robert I married his first wife, Helie of Semur, around 1033. They ended their marriage in 1048. Helie was the daughter of Dalmas I of Semur.
Robert and Helie had five children:
- Hugh (1034–1059), who died in battle.
- Henry (1035–around 1074). He died shortly before his father. His children included Hugh I, Duke of Burgundy (1057–1093), Odo I, Duke of Burgundy (1058–1103), and Henry, Count of Portugal (1066–1112).
- Robert (1040–1113). He married Violante, who was the daughter of Roger I of Sicily.
- Simon (1045–1087).
- Constance (1046–1093). She married Alfonso VI of León and Castile.
Robert's second wife was Ermengarde. She was the daughter of Fulk III of Anjou. Robert and Ermengarde had one daughter:
- Hildegarde (around 1056–1104). She married William VIII of Aquitaine.
