Ermengarde of Anjou (born around 1018 – died March 18, 1076) was a powerful noblewoman from a long time ago. She was also known as Blanche or Ermengarde-Blanche. She became a Duchess when she married a ruler in Burgundy.
Ermengarde was the daughter of Count Fulk III of Anjou and Hildegarde of Sundgau. Her family was very important in the region of Anjou.
Her First Family
Around 1035, Ermengarde married Geoffrey II, Count of Gâtinais. He was sometimes called Ferréol. Together, they had three children:
- Hildegarde de Château-Landon, who later married Joscelin I.
- Geoffrey III, Count of Anjou.
- Fulk IV, Count of Anjou.
Geoffrey II passed away sometime between 1043 and 1046. Sadly, Ermengarde's mother also died in 1046 while on a trip to Jerusalem.
Becoming a Duchess
In 1046, Ermengarde married again. Her second husband was Robert I, Duke of Burgundy. This marriage made her the Duchess consort of Burgundy. A "Duchess consort" is the wife of a Duke.
Ermengarde and Robert had one daughter together:
- Hildegarde (born around 1056 – died 1104). She later married Duke William VIII of Aquitaine.
Ermengarde died on March 18, 1076. She passed away at the Church of Fleurey-sur-Ouche.
