The Capetian Dynasty is a very old and important royal family in Europe. It includes all the direct descendants of a king named Hugh Capet of France. This family has ruled many countries and still has members on thrones today, like King Felipe VI of Spain and the Grand Duke of Luxembourg. They are part of a branch of the family called the Bourbon branch.

The direct Capetians ruled France from the years 987 to 1328. After that, other parts of the same family continued to rule France. The junior House of Valois ruled France until 1589, and the House of Bourbon ruled until the French Revolution in 1792.

The Capetian Family Tree

The Capetian Dynasty started with Hugh Capet of France. He became King of France in the year 987. His family ruled France for over 300 years, until 1328. This period is known as the rule of the direct Capetians.

How the Family Ruled France

After the direct Capetians, other branches of the same family continued to rule France.

  • The House of Valois took over in 1328. They ruled France until 1589.
  • Then, the House of Bourbon became the rulers. They ruled until the French Revolution in 1792.

This means that even though the main line of the Capetians ended, different parts of the same big family kept the throne of France for many centuries.

Capetians Today

Even today, the Capetian family is very important. Many royal families in Europe are related to the Capetians. For example:

  • King Felipe VI of Spain is a member of the Bourbon branch of the Capetian Dynasty.
  • The Grand Duke of Luxembourg is also from the Bourbon branch.

This shows how a family that started ruling over a thousand years ago can still have a big impact on the world today.
