Stephen Carr's Club Career Highlights
Playing for Tottenham Hotspur
Stephen Carr was born in Dublin, Ireland. When he was 15, he joined Tottenham Hotspur from Stella Maris. He made his first team debut on 26 September 1993. It took him a few years to become a regular player. By the 1996–97 season, he was playing in most games.
In 1999, Stephen won the League Cup with Spurs. They beat Leicester City 1–0 in the final. The 1999–2000 season was one of his best. He even scored a powerful goal against champions Manchester United.
Other clubs became interested in Stephen because of his great play. However, in 2001, he had a knee injury that needed surgery. He missed the entire 2001–02 season and the 2002 FIFA World Cup. He returned to play in October 2002.
Playing for Newcastle United
Stephen Carr joined Newcastle United in August 2004. He signed a four-year contract. He made his debut for Newcastle on 14 August in a 2–2 draw against Middlesbrough. He played in 26 league games in his first season and scored one goal. His first goal for Newcastle was a strong shot from far away against Southampton. He helped Newcastle reach the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup and the semi-final of the FA Cup.
In the 2005–06 season, Stephen had more knee problems. He only played in 19 league games. He also had a fractured foot during the 2006–07 season. This kept him out of action for several months. When he returned, other players were doing well in his position. Because of his injuries and new players joining, Newcastle decided not to offer him a new contract. He left the club in 2008.
Coming Out of Retirement for Birmingham City
After leaving Newcastle, Stephen couldn't find a new club. He announced his retirement from football on 1 December 2008. However, in February 2009, he started training with Birmingham City. He signed a one-month contract with them on 23 February. He played his first game for Birmingham the next day.
Stephen played well and signed a longer contract. Birmingham City was promoted to the Premier League, and he signed a new two-year deal. He became the acting captain when the regular captain was injured. He helped Birmingham go 15 games unbeaten in all competitions. This included a club record of 12 unbeaten games in the top league. Towards the end of the 2009–10 season, Stephen received a one-match ban for a gesture he made towards opposing fans.
He led the team to victory in the 2011 Football League Cup final. Birmingham beat Arsenal 2–1 in that exciting match. Stephen played in every game of the 2010–11 Premier League season. However, Birmingham was relegated to the Championship at the end of that season. The club kept him for another year.
Stephen played his 100th game for Birmingham in the Europa League play-off round. This was the first time the club had played in a major European competition in almost 50 years. He had more knee problems in 2011–12. His contract ended in June. But he signed a new one-year deal with the club. Sadly, a new injury in August meant he needed more surgery. He was unable to play again.
At the end of the 2012–13 season, Stephen Carr announced his retirement from football for good. He and his family planned to move to Spain.
