First Meetings and New Empires
In 1046, the powerful Byzantine Empire had its first official meeting with the Seljuks. The Byzantine Empire was a continuation of the old Roman Empire in the East. The Seljuks were a new and growing Turkish empire. This meeting was a big moment in history, as it marked the beginning of a new relationship between these two important powers.
Changes in Hungary
A major event happened in Hungary called the Vatha Pagan Revolt. During this time, there was a rebellion against the spread of Christianity. Sadly, a religious leader named Gerard Sagredo lost his life in Budapest during these events. This revolt showed the struggles between old beliefs and new ones in Hungary.
Leadership in the Church
The year 1046 also saw big changes in the leadership of the Catholic Church. At a meeting called the Council of Sutri, Pope Gregory VI faced accusations. He was accused of something called simony, which meant buying or selling church positions. Because of these accusations, Pope Gregory VI decided to step down from his role as Pope.
Soon after, a new Pope was chosen. Henry III, who was the Holy Roman Emperor, was crowned by the new leader, Pope Clement II. This event showed the close connection between the powerful rulers of Europe and the head of the church during this time.
