Ancient Times and Middle Ages

  • In 363, the Roman Emperor Julian left Antioch with a huge army of 90,000 soldiers. His goal was to attack the Sasanian Empire, but this military campaign sadly led to his own death.
  • In 1046, a traveler named Nasir Khusraw began a seven-year journey across the Middle East. He later wrote all about his adventures in a famous book called Safarnama.
  • In 1279, the Livonian Order faced a big defeat in the Battle of Aizkraukle against the forces of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
  • In 1496, King Henry VII of England gave special permission to John Cabot and his sons. This allowed them to explore new, unknown lands, which was a big deal for discovery!

From the 1600s to the 1900s

The 20th and 21st Centuries

  • In 1906, during the Moro Rebellion, United States Army troops used overwhelming force against the native Moros in the First Battle of Bud Dajo. Only six people survived this conflict.
  • In 1912, during the Italo-Turkish War, Italian forces made history. They were the first to use airships for military purposes, flying them to scout behind Turkish lines.
  • In 1931, the Gandhi–Irwin Pact was signed in British India. This was an agreement between Mahatma Gandhi and the British Viceroy, Lord Irwin.
  • In 1933, Adolf Hitler's Nazi Party won 43.9% of the votes in the Reichstag elections. This victory allowed the Nazis to later pass a law that gave Hitler dictatorial powers.
  • In 1939, during the Spanish Civil War, a group called the National Defence Council took control of the government in a coup. They hoped to negotiate an end to the war.
  • In 1940, six important members of the Soviet politburo, including Joseph Stalin, signed an order for the execution of 25,700 Polish intellectuals and prisoners of war. This terrible event became known as the Katyn massacre.
  • In 1942, during World War II, Japanese forces captured Batavia, the capital of the Dutch East Indies. The city was left undefended after its troops moved to other areas.
  • In 1944, also during World War II, the Red Army began a major military operation called the Uman–Botoșani offensive in the western Ukrainian SSR.
  • In 1946, during the early days of the Cold War, Winston Churchill used the famous phrase "Iron Curtain" in a speech. This phrase described the division between Western and Eastern Europe.
  • In 1953, Joseph Stalin, who had been the leader of the Soviet Union for a very long time, died in Moscow. He had suffered a brain hemorrhage a few days earlier.
  • In 1960, Indonesian President Sukarno dismissed the democratically elected parliament and replaced it with members he had chosen himself.
  • In 1963, American country music stars Patsy Cline, Hawkshaw Hawkins, Cowboy Copas, and their pilot Randy Hughes were killed in a plane crash in Camden, Tennessee.
  • In 1965, an uprising called the March Intifada began in Bahrain. People were protesting against the British colonial presence.
  • In 1966, BOAC Flight 911, a Boeing 707 airplane, broke apart in the air because of strong, clear-air turbulence. It crashed into Mount Fuji, Japan, and all 124 people on board died.
  • In 1970, the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons officially came into effect. This treaty aims to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons.
  • In 1973, an Iberia McDonnell Douglas DC-9 plane collided in mid-air with another plane over Nantes, France. All 68 people on the DC-9 died, including music manager Michael Jeffery.
  • In 1974, during the Yom Kippur War, Israeli forces pulled back from the west bank of the Suez Canal.
  • In 1978, the Landsat 3 satellite was launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.
  • In 1979, Soviet space probes Venera 11, Venera 12, and the German-American satellite Helios II were all hit by extremely powerful "off the scale" gamma rays. This led to the discovery of special objects in space called soft gamma repeaters.
  • In 1981, the ZX81, an early British home computer, was launched by Sinclair Research. It became very popular, selling over 1.5 million units worldwide.
  • In 1982, the Soviet probe Venera 14 successfully landed on the planet Venus.
  • In 2002, an earthquake in Mindanao, Philippines, caused 15 deaths and injured more than 100 people.
  • In 2012, Tropical Storm Irina caused the deaths of over 75 people as it moved through Madagascar.
  • In 2018, during the Syrian civil war, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) paused their military campaign in Deir ez-Zor. This was because of the Turkish-led invasion of Afrin.
  • In 2021, Pope Francis began a historic visit to Iraq, even during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • In 2023, the 2023 Estonian parliamentary election was held. For the first time, two center-right liberal parties won enough votes to have a clear majority.
