Ancient Times and Middle Ages
- In 363, the Roman Emperor Julian left Antioch with a huge army of 90,000 soldiers. His goal was to attack the Sasanian Empire, but this military campaign sadly led to his own death.
- In 1046, a traveler named Nasir Khusraw began a seven-year journey across the Middle East. He later wrote all about his adventures in a famous book called Safarnama.
- In 1279, the Livonian Order faced a big defeat in the Battle of Aizkraukle against the forces of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
- In 1496, King Henry VII of England gave special permission to John Cabot and his sons. This allowed them to explore new, unknown lands, which was a big deal for discovery!
From the 1600s to the 1900s
- In 1616, Nicolaus Copernicus's groundbreaking book, On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres, was added to the Index of Forbidden Books. This happened 73 years after it was first published, showing how new ideas sometimes take a long time to be accepted.
- In 1766, Antonio de Ulloa, who was the very first Spanish governor of Louisiana, arrived in New Orleans.
- In 1770, a sad event known as the Boston Massacre took place. British soldiers shot and killed five Americans, including Crispus Attucks. This event was one of the reasons that led to the start of the American Revolutionary War five years later.
- In 1811, during the Peninsular War, a French army led by Marshal Victor was defeated. They were trying to stop an army from Britain, Spain, and Portugal from ending the Siege of Cádiz in the Battle of Barrosa.
- In 1824, the British government officially declared war on Burma, starting the First Anglo-Burmese War.
- In 1825, Roberto Cofresí, one of the last well-known pirates in the Caribbean, was captured by authorities after a fight.
- In 1836, Samuel Colt received a patent for his first production-model revolver. This was a .34-caliber handgun, a major step in firearm history.
- In 1850, the Britannia Bridge was opened. This amazing bridge crosses the Menai Strait, connecting the island of Anglesey to mainland Wales.

- In 1912, during the Italo-Turkish War, Italian forces made history. They were the first to use airships for military purposes, flying them to scout behind Turkish lines.
- In 1931, the Gandhi–Irwin Pact was signed in British India. This was an agreement between Mahatma Gandhi and the British Viceroy, Lord Irwin.
- In 1933, Adolf Hitler's Nazi Party won 43.9% of the votes in the Reichstag elections. This victory allowed the Nazis to later pass a law that gave Hitler dictatorial powers.
- In 1939, during the Spanish Civil War, a group called the National Defence Council took control of the government in a coup. They hoped to negotiate an end to the war.
