Jacob Harry Maguire (born March 5, 1993) is an English professional footballer. He plays as a centre-back for Manchester United and the England national team.
Maguire started his career in the youth system at Sheffield United. He joined their first team in 2011. He played 166 games for United and was named their Player of the Year three times in a row. He was also chosen for the PFA Team of the Year for League One three times.
In 2014, he moved to Hull City. He was then loaned to Wigan Athletic in 2015. He joined Leicester City in 2017. During the 2017–18 season, he played every minute and was named Player of the Season.
Maguire moved to Manchester United in 2019 for a fee of about £80 million. This was a world-record amount for a defender at the time. Within six months, he became the club captain, a role he held until 2023.
He played one match for the England national under-21 team in 2012. He made his senior debut for England in 2017. He was part of the England squads for the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups. He also played in UEFA Euro 2020, where he was named in the Team of the Tournament.

Early Life and Football Beginnings
Jacob Harry Maguire was born on March 5, 1993, in Sheffield, South Yorkshire. He grew up in the nearby village of Mosborough. His brothers, Joe and Laurence, are also footballers.
He went to Immaculate Conception Catholic Primary School and St Mary's Roman Catholic High School. From ages 7 to 16, Maguire played as a central midfielder for Sheffield United's youth academy.

Starting His Professional Journey (2011–2012)

Harry Maguire came through the youth system at Sheffield United. He joined the first team in April 2011. His first game was against Cardiff City, where he won the Man of the Match award. He played four more games that season. However, the club was relegated to League One.
He scored his first goal for United in a 2–0 win against Oldham Athletic in August 2011. He played every game from the start of the season. In October, he signed a new contract until 2015. At the end of the 2011–12 League One season, he was named "Player of the Year" and "Young Player of the Year" by the club. He was also chosen for the PFA Team of the Year for League One.
Continued Success and Recognition (2012–2014)
Maguire remained a key player in the center of defense. He scored two goals in a 4–1 win over Notts County in October 2012. By February 2013, at just 19 years old, he had made his 100th start for United. Moving to Hull City

On July 29, 2014, Maguire joined Hull City for £2.5 million. He signed a three-year contract. He played his first game for Hull in August in a UEFA Europa League match. He made his Premier League debut in December.
After playing only six games for Hull, Maguire joined Wigan Athletic on a one-month loan in February 2015. He scored his first goal for Wigan in a 3–1 win against Blackpool. His loan was extended until the end of the season.
Becoming a Regular Player (2016–2017)
While Maguire was on loan, Hull City was relegated to the Championship. In May 2016, they won promotion back to the Premier League. Maguire came on as a substitute in the final minute of their 1–0 play-off final win.
In the 2016–17 season, Maguire became a regular starter for Hull. He scored his first goal for Hull in October 2016 in an EFL Cup match. First Season and Captaincy (2019–2020)
In July 2019, Manchester United made a bid for Maguire. Leicester accepted an improved bid of about £80 million in August. This made Maguire the world's most expensive defender. He signed a six-year contract. He made his United debut in a 4–0 win over Chelsea in August 2019 and was named Man of the Match.
In January 2020, Maguire was named club captain by manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær. He scored his first goal for United in an FA Cup win against Tranmere Rovers. On October 17, 2020, Maguire scored his first goal of the season in a 4–1 win against Newcastle United. In January 2021, he scored in a 2–1 loss to his former club Sheffield United. He played the full 90 minutes in United's record-equalling 9–0 win against Southampton in February.
In April, he equaled a club record for playing the most league games without being substituted. He played his 71st consecutive Premier League game. However, he had to be substituted in May due to an ankle injury. Due to this injury, Maguire missed the 2021 Europa League final against Villarreal, which United lost.
Challenges and EFL Cup Victory (2021–2023)
On October 20, 2021, Maguire scored his first Champions League goal in a 3–2 win over Atalanta. In February 2022, he scored his only Premier League goal of the season in a 4–2 win over Leeds United. He faced criticism for his performances during the 2021–22 season. Manchester United finished sixth, conceding many goals.
In the 2022–23 season, Maguire started only eight Premier League matches. New manager Erik ten Hag often chose other defenders. On February 26, 2023, Maguire won the 2023 EFL Cup final with Manchester United. They beat Newcastle United 2–0 at Wembley Stadium. This was his first trophy with the club. He lifted the trophy with on-field captain Bruno Fernandes. Maguire later said that injuries and illness prevented him from getting a good run of games that season.
Regaining Form and Impact (2023–Present)
On July 16, 2023, Maguire announced that he was no longer Manchester United's captain. Bruno Fernandes was named the new captain. Maguire was linked with a move to West Ham United, but he decided to stay and fight for his place.
During the 2023–24 season, Maguire began playing more regularly. Manager Erik ten Hag praised his improved form. On October 7, 2023, Maguire provided an assist for a late winning goal against Brentford. On October 24, he scored the only goal in a Champions League match against Copenhagen.
