Daniel William Carter (born March 5, 1982) is a famous retired rugby union player from New Zealand. He played for the Crusaders team and New Zealand's national team, the famous All Blacks. Many people believe he is the best first five-eighth (also called fly-half) to ever play rugby. This is a key position that directs the team's attack.
Carter holds the world record for scoring the most points in international rugby matches. He was named the World Rugby Player of the Year three times, in 2005, 2012, and 2015. He helped the All Blacks win the Rugby World Cup in 2011 and 2015. In the 2015 final, he was named the man of the match for his amazing performance.

Early Life and Beginnings
Dan Carter grew up in the small town of Southbridge on the South Island of New Zealand. He started playing rugby when he was only five years old for the Southbridge Rugby Club. At first, he played as a half back.
He went to Ellesmere College, where he started playing in the first five-eighth position. To improve his rugby skills, he moved to Christchurch Boys' High School for his final year of school. His great uncle, Bill Dalley, was also a famous rugby player for New Zealand.
Club Rugby Career
Carter's professional career began in 2002 with the Canterbury team. The next year, he joined the Crusaders, a top team in the Super Rugby competition. With the Crusaders, he played in four finals and helped them win the championship in 2005, 2006, and 2008. In the 2006 season, he set a record by scoring 221 points in a single season.
Over the years, Carter also played for teams in other countries. He had short but successful times with Perpignan in France, Racing 92 in Paris, and the Kobelco Steelers in Japan. He helped his teams win major championships, including the Top 14 title in France with two different clubs.
In 2020, he joined the Blues team in New Zealand, but he did not play any official games for them. On February 20, 2021, Carter announced on his Instagram that he was retiring from professional rugby.
International Career with the All Blacks
Carter made his debut for the All Blacks in 2003 when he was 21. In his very first game against Wales, he scored 20 points. He quickly became a key player for the team.
He was part of the 2003 Rugby World Cup team and became the team's main first five-eighth in 2004. One of his most famous games was in 2005 against the British & Irish Lions. He scored an incredible 33 points, including two tries, which helped the All Blacks win 48–18.
World Records and Achievements
On November 27, 2010, Carter became the highest point scorer in the history of international rugby. He finished his career with a total of 1,598 points in 112 games for the All Blacks. This is a world record that still stands today.
He played in two winning Rugby World Cup campaigns. In 2011, he was injured during the tournament, but in 2015, he played a huge role. In the final match against Australia, he scored 19 points and was named Man of the Match. This victory was a perfect end to his All Blacks career. On November 16, 2013, he became the fifth All Black to play in 100 international matches.
Personal Life
In 2011, Carter married Honor Carter, who used to play for New Zealand's national field hockey team. They have four children together.
Outside of rugby, Carter has been involved in modeling and has worked with several well-known brands. He has also been a spokesperson for different companies. In 2018, he shared that he once thought about playing American football as a kicker for the New England Patriots in the National Football League (NFL).
