Early Life and First Steps in Magic
Jillette was born in Greenfield, Massachusetts. His mother, Valda, was a secretary, and his father, Samuel, worked at a local jail.
In his early teens, Jillette became an atheist after reading the Bible and asking questions about it. He was not a fan of magicians who pretended their tricks were real magic.
When he was 18, he saw a show by the magician James Randi. Jillette loved how Randi was honest that his magic was just a form of entertainment using tricks and deception. Jillette has said that Randi was one of the most important people in his life.
After graduating from high school in 1973, Jillette also graduated from Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Clown College. He started performing a juggling act with a classmate. In 1974, a friend introduced him to Teller. The two of them, along with their friend Weir Chrisemer, formed an act. By 1981, Jillette and Teller were performing as the duo Penn & Teller. Their show became a big success and toured across the country.
