Club Career
Starting Out and 1860 Munich
Jens Jeremies was born in Görlitz, which was in East Germany at the time. When he was 12, he joined the youth team of Dynamo Dresden. This was one of the most important football clubs in the country.
He didn't play much in his first two professional seasons. All his games were in the 1994–95 season. His first game was on April 1, 1995, against TSV 1860 München. Dynamo Dresden lost that game 3-1. That season, his team left the Bundesliga after being there for four years.
In 1995, Jeremies joined 1860 Munich. He helped the team, nicknamed the "Lions," to qualify for the UEFA Cup in his second year. During his three years there, he received 30 yellow cards and two red cards. Yellow cards are warnings, and red cards mean a player must leave the game.
Playing for Bayern Munich
In the summer of 1998, Jeremies moved to FC Bayern Munich, 1860 Munich's city rivals. He stayed with Bayern Munich for the rest of his career. With Bayern, he won all his major trophies.
He helped them win six league titles and three national cups. He also won the 2000–01 UEFA Champions League. In that Champions League season, he played 12 games and scored three goals. One of his goals was in the 2-1 semifinal win against Real Madrid. Bayern won 3-1 overall in that match. Jeremies missed the final game because he was suspended.
In his last two years, Jeremies played only 20 matches. This was mainly because of ongoing knee problems. He decided to retire from football at age 32. He played in 251 German top-division matches over 12 seasons, scoring nine goals in total.
International Career
While playing for 1860 Munich, Jens Jeremies made his first appearance for the German national team. This was on November 15, 1997, in a friendly match against South Africa. Germany won 3-0 in Düsseldorf, and Jeremies played the whole game.
He was then chosen for the squad for the 1998 FIFA World Cup. He played in three games before Germany was knocked out in the quarter-finals. During that tournament, a German entertainer jokingly called him "Jens Jerenaldo."
On March 31, 1999, Jeremies scored his first and only goal for the national team. It helped Germany win 2-0 at home against Finland in a qualifying game for UEFA Euro 2000. This goal was even chosen as "Goal of the Month" in Germany. However, he was later dropped from the national team before the Euro 2000 finals. This happened after he expressed strong opinions about the team's performance under coach Erich Ribbeck.
Jeremies was brought back for the 2002 FIFA World Cup. He even got to be the captain of the team once in a friendly game after the World Cup. But he retired from international football after Germany was eliminated in the group stage of Euro 2004 in Portugal. He said he wanted to focus more on playing for his club, Bayern Munich.
