Early Racing Days
Luciano Burti started his racing journey like many others. He moved up through different racing series. He raced in British Formula 3 for the strong Stewart Racing team. In 1999, his second year in F3, he finished second overall. Another driver, Jenson Button, who finished third that year, later became a big star in Formula One.
Luciano did very well when he tested the Stewart Formula One car. Because of this, he became a test driver for the Jaguar F1 team in 2000. This happened largely because Jackie Stewart, the team's boss at the time, supported him.
Formula One Career
Racing in F1 (2000–2001)
Luciano got a surprise chance to race in a Grand Prix on 16 July 2000. This was at the Austrian Grand Prix. He was called in at the last minute to replace Eddie Irvine, who was unwell.
Because he had tested well for Jaguar, he joined the main race team in 2001. He raced alongside Eddie Irvine, taking the place of Johnny Herbert, who was retiring. However, after only four races, he was replaced by another driver, Pedro de la Rosa.
Luciano quickly found a new seat at the Prost team. He replaced Gastón Mazzacane, who had been let go. Luciano raced well for Prost. He achieved his best finish, eighth place, at the Canadian Grand Prix. Sometimes, he even qualified ahead of his very experienced teammate, Jean Alesi.
One of his most memorable moments was an accident at the German Grand Prix. Right after the race started, Michael Schumacher's car had a problem. Luciano couldn't avoid it and hit the back of Schumacher's car. This made his Prost car flip over. Another car, driven by Enrique Bernoldi, was also involved. Luckily, none of the three drivers were hurt. They all took part in the restarted race. Luciano, however, later spun out of that race.
Big Crash at the 2001 Belgian Grand Prix
Two races later, Luciano had a more serious crash at the Belgian Grand Prix. His car touched Eddie Irvine's car while he was trying to overtake him. Luciano's front wing got stuck under his front wheels. This meant he couldn't brake or steer his car. He crashed into the tire barrier at a very high speed. The impact was so strong that parts of the barrier flew into the air. These pieces landed on Luciano's cockpit, making him lose consciousness. Eddie Irvine, who also had a big impact, helped the race officials get Luciano out of his car.
This crash meant Luciano could not race for the rest of the season. He had facial bruises and a concussion. A new driver, Tomáš Enge, took his place.
After Formula One (2002–2004)
After his time racing in Formula One, Luciano became a test driver for the famous Ferrari team. He stayed with Ferrari until his contract ended in 2004. During his Formula One career, he did not score any championship points.
Luciano has since returned to Brazil. There, he races in Stock Car Brasil, a popular racing series. He also works as a commentator, explaining Formula One races for TV Globo.
