TV Globo, also known simply as Globo, is a famous Brazilian television network that you can watch for free. It was started by a man named Roberto Marinho on April 26, 1965. Today, it's owned by his family's company, Grupo Globo.

Globo is the biggest TV network in Latin America and one of the largest in the world. It's especially famous for making telenovelas, which are like soap operas. Because of this, Globo is a very important and well-known TV network globally.

The main office for Globo's news is in Rio de Janeiro. The shows and telenovelas are filmed at a huge studio complex called Estúdios Globo, which is also in Rio. The network has 5 TV stations that it owns directly and over 100 partner stations, called affiliates, all across Brazil. This means its shows can reach almost everyone in the country.

Globo produces a lot of content every year, including about 2,400 hours of entertainment and 3,000 hours of news. The network is known for its high-quality shows and has won 14 international Emmy Awards. It also has international channels, like TV Globo Internacional, so people in over 190 countries can watch Brazilian shows.

In Brazil, Globo's shows are incredibly popular. The 20 most-watched programs in Brazilian TV history were all from Globo. One of its biggest hits was the telenovela Avenida Brasil, which was watched by 50 million people and sold to 130 countries.

How It All Began

The story of TV Globo starts long before the TV channel existed. In 1925, the Marinho family started a newspaper called O Globo. Then, in 1944, they launched Rádio Globo, a radio station that became famous for its news.

In 1963, the Brazilian government gave Rádio Globo permission to start a TV channel. Two years later, on April 26, 1965, TV Globo began broadcasting in Rio de Janeiro. The first show was a children's program called Uni Duni Tê.

A year later, Globo bought a TV station in São Paulo, which helped it grow and become more popular across the country.

Becoming a National Network

In 1969, TV Globo launched Jornal Nacional (National News), the first live national news show in Brazil. It became a huge success. The show's theme song and the hosts' famous "Boa Noite" ("Good night") closing are still recognized today.

The network continued to grow by partnering with local TV stations in different parts of Brazil. This allowed people all over the country to watch Globo's programs. In 1970, the network broadcast the FIFA World Cup for the first time. This was also the year its famous Plim-Plim sound, played between shows, was first heard.

Famous Shows and Big Stars

The 1980s were a big decade for Globo. In 1986, the children's show Xou da Xuxa (Xuxa's Show), hosted by Xuxa Meneghel, became a massive hit. It aired for seven years and was loved by kids all over Brazil. Another popular show was the comedy Os Trapalhões.

In 1995, Globo celebrated its 30th anniversary. It opened its new, modern studios, Estúdios Globo, and launched the teen series Malhação, which ran for 27 seasons.

The network also created a news channel called Globo News in 1996. It shows news 24 hours a day and replays programs from the main Globo channel.

TV Globo in the 21st Century

In 2001, the telenovela O Clone became a huge international success and was shown in 91 countries. However, over the years, viewership for telenovelas began to drop as people had more channels and entertainment choices.

Even so, some shows like Da Cor do Pecado (2004) and Avenida Brasil (2012) were incredibly popular and broke rating records.

To keep up with changing times, Globo has focused more on digital platforms. In 2015, it launched Globoplay, a streaming service where people can watch Globo's shows on demand. By 2020, it had over 20 million users.

The network has also faced challenges. During the COVID-19 pandemic, filming for many shows had to be stopped to keep actors and crew safe. This meant that for a while, the network had to show reruns of older telenovelas.

Globo's first logo in 1965 was a star shape that looked like the number 4, for its channel number in Rio. A year later, it changed to a circle with a mesh pattern.

The most famous logo design appeared in 1976. It was created by a designer named Hans Donner. It features a sphere that looks like a globe, with a TV screen shape cut out of it, and a smaller globe inside the screen.

In 1986, this logo was updated to have a rainbow-colored screen and a silver globe. This rainbow logo became iconic and was used for many years. It was updated a few times to look more modern, especially when TV switched to high-definition (HD).

In 2021, the logo was redesigned again to have a softer, more modern look with different bright color schemes instead of the rainbow. This was part of a big change where the network started calling itself "tvglobo" in lowercase.
