Who Was Roberto Marinho?
Roberto Marinho was born in 1904 in Rio de Janeiro. His father, Irineu Marinho, was a publisher. His mother had Italian roots, and his father had Portuguese roots. Roberto was raised as a Roman Catholic and went to local schools.
Starting a Newspaper
On July 29, 1925, Roberto's father, Irineu Marinho, started a morning newspaper. It was called O Globo. Sadly, his father passed away just three weeks later. Roberto was only 21 years old at the time. He loved journalism and decided to work at the newspaper he inherited. He started as a trainee reporter. Six years later, he became the chief editor.
Building a Media Empire
In the 1940s, Roberto Marinho expanded his company into commercial radio. This meant they started owning and running radio stations. In the 1960s, he took his company into television. On April 26, 1965, he founded Rede Globo. This TV channel became the main one in Brazil. It grew to be the second largest TV network in the world.
During this time, Brazil was under a military government. This government sometimes put pressure on media companies.
Globo's Big Reach

His company, Organizações Globo, controlled many things. This included the O Globo newspaper and TV Globo. It also had a chain of radio stations, like Rádio Globo and Rádio CBN. Plus, it owned many other cable TV channels.
Globo Television reaches almost every home in Brazil. It has 113 stations and partners. The network is so powerful that it can even decide when Brazil's soccer matches start.
Famous TV Shows
TV Globo became very successful by producing telenovelas, which are like long soap operas. They have sold many of these shows to different countries. This earned them a lot of money. One of their biggest successes was Isaura the Slave Girl. This show was sold to over 80 countries, including China, in the 1970s.
