Previous season: 2000   Next season: 2002

The 2001 Formula One season was the 52nd year of the Formula One World Championship. This is the highest class of racing for open-wheel cars. Michael Schumacher became the Driver's Champion. He was very strong throughout the season. He won by a huge 58-point lead, which was a record at the time. His team, Ferrari, won the Constructors' Championship. This means they were the best team overall.

After being away for four years, Renault came back to Formula One. They supplied engines to teams. Michelin also returned as a tyre supplier. This was the first time since 1998 that Bridgestone had another tyre company to compete with.

The 2001 season was special because two future champions started their first Formula One races. These were Fernando Alonso and Kimi Räikkönen. It was also the last year for famous drivers like Jean Alesi and world champion Mika Häkkinen.

At the end of 2001, the Prost team had to close down. They ran out of money. The French company Renault then bought the Benetton team. Benetton was later renamed the Renault F1 team.
