History of the Austrian Grand Prix
The first Austrian Grand Prix took place in 1964 at a race track on the Zeltweg Airfield. But this track wasn't very safe. It was too narrow and bumpy, and fans couldn't see the race well. Because of these problems, the FIA (the main group in charge of motor racing) stopped the race until a better track could be built.
From 1970 to 1987, the race moved to a new track called the Österreichring, near Zeltweg. In 1975, it was even called the European Grand Prix. But by 1987, the FIA decided this track was also too dangerous for modern F1 cars. So, the race was stopped again for ten years.
In 1995 and 1996, the track was completely changed and made much safer and more modern. The race returned to F1 in 1997. The circuit was renamed the A1-Ring, after a sponsor. Most of this new track is in Spielberg. The last Austrian Grand Prix for a while was in 2003. Luckily, the Grand Prix came back to the Formula One calendar in 2014 at the same track, now called the Red Bull Ring.
