The 1983 Formula One season was a super exciting year for car racing! It was the 34th time this big championship happened. The champion was a fantastic driver named Nelson Piquet, who won after a really close fight right up to the very end.


What is Formula One?

Formula One, or F1, is the highest class of international racing for open-wheel single-seater formula racing cars. It's like the Olympics for race cars! Teams build super-fast cars, and skilled drivers race them on special tracks around the world. Every year, drivers compete for the Drivers' Championship, and teams compete for the Constructors' Championship.

The 1983 season was special because it was the first time a car with a turbo engine won the Drivers' Championship. Turbo engines made cars much more powerful! The 1983 season was full of exciting races and close calls. Nelson Piquet's Brabham car, powered by a BMW turbo engine, was very fast, especially in the second half of the season.
