Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The 1964 Formula One season was a thrilling year in the world of car racing. It was a time when brave drivers competed in powerful open-wheel cars. At the end of this exciting season, John Surtees was crowned the champion. He became a legend by winning the top prize in Formula One.

A Look Back at the 1964 Season

The 1964 Formula One season had 10 exciting races, called Grand Prix events. These races took place in different countries around the world. Drivers competed on famous tracks like Monaco, Zandvoort in the Netherlands, and Nürburgring in Germany. Each race was a chance for drivers to earn points. The goal was to collect as many points as possible to win the championship.

Some of the top drivers who won races that year included:

  • Graham Hill won the first race in Monaco and also the race in the United States.
  • Jim Clark was very fast, winning three races: the Dutch, Belgian, and British Grand Prix.
  • Dan Gurney from the USA won two races, the French and Mexican Grand Prix.
  • John Surtees won races in Germany and Italy, which helped him become champion.
  • Lorenzo Bandini from Italy also won a race in Austria.

It was a very close championship battle. Many drivers showed great skill and speed throughout the year.

The Fight for the Championship

The 1964 season was a close contest right up to the very last race. Drivers earned points based on where they finished in each race. The more races a driver won or finished near the top, the more points they got. However, only a driver's best 6 results counted towards their final score. This rule made the championship even more exciting.

John Surtees, driving for Ferrari, showed amazing skill. He won two important races, in Germany and Italy. These wins, along with other strong finishes, helped him gather 40 points.

Graham Hill, driving for BRM, was also a strong contender. He actually scored a total of 41 points during the year. But because of the rule that only the best 6 results counted, only 39 of his points were used for the championship.

This meant that even though Graham Hill had more total points, John Surtees's 40 points were all counted. This made John Surtees the World Champion of 1964! It was a very exciting finish to the season, showing how every point mattered.
