Valtteri Viktor Bottas (born 28 August 1989) is a Finnish racing driver. He is currently a reserve driver in Formula One for Mercedes. Bottas raced in Formula One from 2013 to 2024. He finished second in the Formula One World Drivers' Championship twice, in 2019 and 2020, while driving for Mercedes. He has won 10 Grand Prix races over 12 seasons.
Valtteri grew up in Nastola, Finland. He started kart racing at age six. After studying automotive engineering and completing military service, Bottas began racing in junior series in 2007. He won his first championship in the Formula Renault NEC in 2008. He also won the Formula Renault Eurocup that same year. He then won the Masters of Formula 3 twice in a row, in 2009 and 2010. In 2011, he won the GP3 Series.
After two years as a test driver, Bottas joined Williams in 2013. He made his Formula One debut at the Australian Grand Prix Grand Prix. In 2014, he finished fourth in the championship. He achieved his first podium finish at the Austrian Grand Prix Grand Prix. During his four seasons at Williams, Bottas finished on the podium nine times.
Bottas moved to Mercedes in 2017. He replaced Nico Rosberg and became teammates with Lewis Hamilton. He earned his first pole position in Bahrain. He then won his first race in Russia. He finished third in the championship that year. After a season without wins in 2018, Bottas finished second to Hamilton in both the 2019 and 2020 seasons. His last win for Mercedes was at the Turkish Grand Prix Grand Prix in 2021. He left Mercedes at the end of that season. He helped the team win five straight World Constructors' Championships. He then joined Alfa Romeo in 2022 and stayed for his 2023 season. After a season without points in 2024 with Sauber, Bottas returned to Mercedes as a reserve driver.
Valtteri Bottas has achieved 10 race wins, 20 pole positions, 19 fastest laps, and 67 podiums in Formula One. He holds the Formula One record for the most career points without winning a World Drivers' Championship.

Early Life and Beginnings
Valtteri was born in Nastola, Finland, on 28 August 1989. His father owns a cleaning company, and his mother is an undertaker. He went to school in Heinola. Bottas briefly served in the army, which is required for adult males in Finland.
Discovering Racing
Valtteri's interest in motorsport started when he was six. He saw an advertisement for a karting event at a supermarket. His racing hero growing up was fellow Finnish driver Mika Häkkinen.
Junior Racing Career
Karting Success
Bottas competed in the 2005 Karting World Cup. He finished eighth while driving for the P.D.B. Racing Team.
Early Car Racing Wins
Bottas won both the 2008 Formula Renault Eurocup and the 2008 Formula Renault Northern European Cup. He was the second driver to win both championships in the same year. He also won three out of four races in the 2007 Formula Renault UK Winter Series.

Formula Three and GP3
He moved to the Formula Three Euroseries in 2009. He drove for the ART Grand Prix team. He finished third in the championship, even without winning a race. In June 2009, Bottas won the Masters of Formula 3. He also got pole position and the fastest lap. He won the F3 Masters title again in 2010, becoming the first driver to do so twice.
In 2011, he raced in the GP3 Series with ART. After a difficult start, he won a race in each of the last four weekends. He secured the championship title by winning the second-to-last race.
Formula One Career
Williams Team (2010–2016)
Becoming a Test Driver
Valtteri Bottas became the official test driver for the Williams team in January 2010. The team boss, Frank Williams, praised Bottas's success in junior racing. He hoped this role would help Bottas develop further. Bottas continued as a test driver in 2011. In 2012, his role grew after his GP3 Series win. He took part in fifteen Friday practice sessions. His first Grand Prix weekend appearance was at the Malaysian Grand Prix Grand Prix.
First Full Season (2013)
In November 2012, Williams announced that Bottas would be a full-time race driver for the 2013 season. He would race alongside Pastor Maldonado. He finished 14th in his first race, the Australian Grand Prix Grand Prix. He qualified 16th, ahead of Maldonado. At the Malaysian Grand Prix Grand Prix, he improved from 18th to 11th. He qualified third at the Canadian Grand Prix Grand Prix. This was the first time a Williams car was in the top ten that year. He finished 14th in the race. A hydraulics problem caused him to retire from the Hungarian Grand Prix Grand Prix. Bottas scored his first Formula One points at the United States Grand Prix Grand Prix, finishing eighth.
Bottas ended his first season 17th in the championship. He earned four of Williams's five points. He was praised for his driving in Canada and the United States.
First Podiums (2014)
Williams kept Bottas for the 2014 season. His new teammate was Felipe Massa. At the first race in Australia, Bottas started 15th due to a penalty. He hit a wall, causing a flat tire, but still finished sixth. He was later moved up to fifth place. At the Austrian Grand Prix Grand Prix, Bottas qualified second, behind Massa. This was his best starting position at the time. Both drivers were passed by Mercedes cars. However, Bottas held on to third place, earning his first podium in Formula One.
He got another podium finish in second place at the British Grand Prix Grand Prix. He started 14th but made good overtakes. He then qualified and finished second at the German Grand Prix Grand Prix. This was his third podium in a row. Another podium came at the Belgian Grand Prix Grand Prix, where he finished third. Bottas finished third again at the Russian Grand Prix Grand Prix and set the fastest lap. He ended the season with another third-place finish at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix Grand Prix.
The 2014 season ended with Bottas in fourth place in the championship. He had six podium finishes and scored 186 points. Williams finished third in the Constructors' Championship, their best result since 2003.
2015 Season
In September 2014, Williams announced that Bottas and Massa would continue as teammates for the 2015 season. Bottas qualified sixth at the first race in Australia. However, he suffered a back injury and could not race. He returned at the Malaysian Grand Prix Grand Prix, finishing fifth. He scored points in the next three races. His first podium of 2015 was at the Canadian Grand Prix Grand Prix, where he finished third.
At the Belgian Grand Prix Grand Prix, he started third. However, his team made a mistake during a pit stop, fitting two different types of tires. He received a penalty and finished ninth. He was set to finish third at the Russian Grand Prix Grand Prix. But Kimi Räikkönen crashed into him on the last lap. Bottas retired from the United States Grand Prix Grand Prix due to a suspension problem. He finished third at the Mexican Grand Prix Grand Prix, his second and final podium of the season.
Bottas finished fifth in the championship in 2015. He scored 136 points. Williams kept third place in the Constructors' Championship.
2016 Season
Bottas and Massa remained teammates at Williams for the 2016 season. He started 16th at the first race in Australia due to a penalty. However, he still scored points. He caused a crash with Lewis Hamilton on the first lap at the Bahrain Grand Prix Grand Prix. He received a penalty and finished ninth. He scored points in the next three races. He achieved his best qualifying result of the season at the Russian Grand Prix Grand Prix, starting third and finishing fourth.
He got Williams's only podium finish of 2016 at the Canadian Grand Prix Grand Prix. He started seventh but climbed to third place. Bottas reached an unofficial Formula One record speed of 378 km/h (235 mph) in qualifying for the European Grand Prix Grand Prix. He retired from the Singapore Grand Prix Grand Prix due to a flat tire and car issues.
Bottas finished eighth in the championship in 2016. He scored 85 points. Williams finished fifth in the Constructors' Championship.
Mercedes Team (2017–2021)
First Race Win (2017)
Bottas was supposed to stay at Williams for a fifth year. But after champion Nico Rosberg retired, Mercedes signed Bottas to race with Lewis Hamilton in January 2017. Williams allowed him to leave for a championship-contending team.
Bottas finished third in his first race for Mercedes, the Australian Grand Prix Grand Prix. He spun behind the safety car at the Chinese Grand Prix Grand Prix but recovered to sixth. He earned his first pole position at the Bahrain Grand Prix Grand Prix. He finished third in that race. He started third at the Russian Grand Prix Grand Prix. He overtook both Ferraris on the first lap and won his first Grand Prix. This made him the fifth Finnish driver to win a race. He retired from the Spanish Grand Prix Grand Prix with an engine problem. He finished second behind Hamilton at the Canadian Grand Prix Grand Prix. He also recovered to finish second at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix Grand Prix after an early crash.
He took pole position and won at the Austrian Grand Prix Grand Prix. This put him only 15 points behind Hamilton in the championship. He finished second at the British Grand Prix Grand Prix. He gave up third place at the Hungarian Grand Prix Grand Prix to help Hamilton. Hamilton later gave the position back to Bottas. Bottas finished second at the Italian Grand Prix Grand Prix. He finished third at the Singapore Grand Prix Grand Prix. His performances helped Mercedes win their fourth Constructors' Championship in a row. He finished second at the Mexican Grand Prix Grand Prix. He took pole position at the Brazilian Grand Prix Grand Prix but finished second. He claimed pole position again at the last race in Abu Dhabi and won his third Grand Prix.
Bottas finished third overall in the championship with 305 points. He qualified ahead of Hamilton in six races.
2018 Season
Mercedes announced in September 2017 that Bottas would stay with the team for the 2018 season. He started 15th at the first race in Australia after a crash. He recovered to finish eighth. He qualified third, ahead of Hamilton, at the Bahrain Grand Prix Grand Prix. He finished less than a second behind the winner. He led the Azerbaijan Grand Prix Grand Prix with two laps left. But he ran over debris, got a flat tire, and had to retire. He finished second at the Spanish and Canadian Grands Prix.
Bottas qualified second at the French Grand Prix Grand Prix. But he was hit by Sebastian Vettel at the start. He had to pit for repairs and finished seventh. He took his first pole position of the year at the Austrian Grand Prix Grand Prix. But he lost the lead and retired with a gearbox problem. He was fighting Hamilton for the lead at the German Grand Prix Grand Prix. But Mercedes told him to "hold position" and finish second. He finished fifth at the Hungarian Grand Prix Grand Prix after contact with other drivers. Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff called Bottas a "sensational wingman." Bottas said the description was hurtful.
Bottas finished on the podium at the Italian Grand Prix Grand Prix after another driver received a penalty. He got pole position at the Russian Grand Prix Grand Prix. But Mercedes told him to let Hamilton pass during the race. This was to help Hamilton's championship points. The Japanese Grand Prix Grand Prix was his last podium finish of the year.
Bottas became the first Mercedes driver since 2012 to finish a season without a win. He finished fifth in the championship with 247 points. Hamilton won his fifth world title with 408 points. Bottas later said he almost quit racing after 2018.
Championship Runner-Up (2019–2020)
In July 2018, Bottas signed a contract to stay with Mercedes for the 2019 season. He qualified second behind Hamilton at the Australian Grand Prix Grand Prix. But he overtook Hamilton at the first corner and won the race. He finished second behind Hamilton at the Bahrain Grand Prix Grand Prix. He took pole position at the Chinese Grand Prix Grand Prix. He then won from pole position at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix Grand Prix. This put him in the lead of the championship by one point over Hamilton.
Azerbaijan was the last time Bottas led the championship. Hamilton won the next four races. Bottas took his third pole position in a row at the Spanish Grand Prix Grand Prix. But he was overtaken by Hamilton and finished second. He finished third at the Monaco Grand Prix Grand Prix after contact with another car. He finished second behind Hamilton at the French Grand Prix Grand Prix. He finished third at the Austrian Grand Prix Grand Prix. He crashed out of the German Grand Prix Grand Prix. Damage to his car led to an eighth-place finish at the Hungarian Grand Prix Grand Prix.
He got more podiums at the Belgian, Italian, and Russian Grands Prix. He then won his sixth Formula One race at the Japanese Grand Prix Grand Prix. This win helped Mercedes secure their sixth Constructors' Championship. He crashed in qualifying at the Mexican Grand Prix Grand Prix but recovered to third. He won from pole position at the United States Grand Prix Grand Prix. However, Hamilton secured the championship in that race. Bottas retired from the Brazilian Grand Prix Grand Prix with an engine problem.
Bottas finished second in the championship in 2019 with 326 points. He had four wins, fifteen podiums, five pole positions, and three fastest laps. This was his most successful year at Mercedes.

Bottas continued with Mercedes alongside Hamilton for 2020. He set the fastest time in pre-season testing. Bottas took pole position at the first race in Austria and led from start to finish. He finished second behind Hamilton at the Styrian Grand Prix. Bottas qualified second at the Hungarian Grand Prix Grand Prix but made a false start. He recovered to third place. He suffered a tire failure with four laps left at the British Grand Prix Grand Prix and finished 11th. Bottas secured pole position at the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix but finished third.
He qualified second for the Spanish Grand Prix Grand Prix but finished third. He finished second at the Belgian Grand Prix Grand Prix. He took the lead from Hamilton on the first lap at the Tuscan Grand Prix Grand Prix. He finished second after a red flag. He won his ninth Grand Prix victory at the Russian Grand Prix Grand Prix. He took pole position for the Eifel Grand Prix Grand Prix but retired with power loss. Bottas finished second at both the Portuguese and Emilia Romagna Grands Prix.
Both Mercedes cars struggled in wet qualifying for the Turkish Grand Prix Grand Prix. Bottas qualified ninth. He spun six times in the race and finished 14th. This allowed Hamilton to win his seventh world title. Bottas finished eighth at the Bahrain Grand Prix after a flat tire. He took pole position at the Sakhir Grand Prix. A tire mix-up during the race dropped him down the order. At the last race in Abu Dhabi, Bottas qualified and finished second.
Bottas finished second in the championship in 2020 with 223 points. He had two wins, five pole positions, and eleven podiums.
Final Mercedes Season (2021)
Bottas extended his contract with Mercedes into 2021. He finished third at the first race in Bahrain. He was involved in a high-speed crash with George Russell at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix Grand Prix. He qualified on pole position at the Portuguese Grand Prix but finished third. He achieved another podium at the Spanish Grand Prix, finishing third. He retired from the Monaco Grand Prix when his team could not remove a wheel during a pit stop. He finished 12th at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix Grand Prix.
Bottas finished third at the Styrian Grand Prix Grand Prix. He finished second at the Austrian Grand Prix Grand Prix. He achieved another podium with third place at the British Grand Prix Grand Prix. He caused a first-corner crash at the Hungarian Grand Prix Grand Prix. He regained third place in the championship with a podium at the Dutch Grand Prix Grand Prix. He won the sprint qualifying session at the Italian Grand Prix Grand Prix. He started the main race from the back due to engine changes but recovered to fourth.
He started on pole position at the Turkish Grand Prix Grand Prix after Hamilton received a penalty. He went on to win his first and only race of the year. He described it as one of his best wins. He finished sixth at the United States Grand Prix Grand Prix. He took pole position at the Mexico City Grand Prix Grand Prix but dropped to the back after a slow start and contact. He finished on the podium at the first ever Saudi Arabian Grand Prix Grand Prix.
Bottas finished third in the championship in 2021 with 226 points. He helped Mercedes win their eighth Constructors' Championship in a row. It was announced that 2021 would be his last year with Mercedes. He said it was a "privilege and a great sporting challenge" to work with Hamilton.
Alfa Romeo / Sauber Team (2022–2024)
Starting Fresh (2022)
Bottas joined Alfa Romeo for 2022 on a multi-year deal. His teammate was rookie driver Zhou Guanyu. He called the move "a bit of a project" and felt responsible for guiding the team. He finished sixth at the first race in Bahrain. He retired from the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix Grand Prix due to a cooling problem. He finished eighth at the Australian Grand Prix Grand Prix. He finished fifth at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix Grand Prix. At the Miami Grand Prix, Bottas qualified fifth. He held his position until a mistake allowed both Mercedes drivers to pass him.
He finished ninth in changing conditions at the Monaco Grand Prix Grand Prix. He retired from the British Grand Prix Grand Prix with a gearbox problem. He had three retirements in a row at the Hungarian, Belgian, and Dutch Grands Prix. He said that reliability was a weak point for his car. He returned to scoring points at the Mexico City Grand Prix Grand Prix, finishing tenth.
Bottas finished 10th in the championship in 2022. He scored 49 points. Alfa Romeo finished sixth in the Constructors' Championship. He described his season as "probably the most enjoyable so far."
2023 Season
Bottas continued driving for Alfa Romeo with Zhou for 2023. He finished eighth at the first race in Bahrain. He finished 18th at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix Grand Prix due to car damage. After another 18th-place finish at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix Grand Prix, Bottas said his car had better handling but lacked speed. He reached the final qualifying session (Q3) at the Miami Grand Prix Grand Prix for the first time that year. His first points since Bahrain came at the Canadian Grand Prix Grand Prix, where he finished tenth. His car broke down in qualifying at the British Grand Prix Grand Prix. He recovered from 20th on the grid to 12th in the race.
Both Alfa Romeo drivers reached Q3 at the Hungarian Grand Prix Grand Prix. Bottas was seventh. His third points finish of the season came at the Italian Grand Prix Grand Prix, where he finished tenth. He had two retirements in a row due to technical issues and crash damage. His fourth and final points finish of 2023 was at the Qatar Grand Prix Grand Prix, where he finished eighth. He reached Q3 again at the Mexico City Grand Prix Grand Prix. Both Alfa Romeo drivers then retired from reliability problems at the São Paulo Grand Prix Grand Prix.
Bottas finished 15th in the championship in 2023. He scored ten points. Alfa Romeo finished ninth in the Constructors' Championship. He called the season a "tough ride."
2024 Season
Bottas and Zhou stayed with the team for the 2024 season. The team was renamed Stake F1 Team Kick Sauber. He finished 19th at the first race in Bahrain due to a very slow pit stop. Pit stop problems continued at the next races. He reached Q3 at the Chinese Grand Prix Grand Prix, qualifying 10th. But he retired from the race with an engine problem.
The next few races showed that the car lacked speed. Bottas managed to get into Q2 in Hungary, Belgium, Mexico, and Qatar. The car showed some improvements in the last few races. The team hoped for points at the Las Vegas Grand Prix. But Bottas got a penalty for using too many engine parts. The Qatar Grand Prix suited the car better. Zhou finished eighth and Bottas finished 11th, just outside the points. This was the team's first points of the season.
Bottas made another Q3 appearance at the last race in Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. But he had a first-lap crash with Sergio Perez, getting a 10-second penalty. He also crashed with Kevin Magnussen, which made him retire from the race. Bottas failed to score points for the first time in his Formula One career in 2024. He finished 22nd in the standings.
Neither Bottas nor Zhou were kept by the team after 2024. Nico Hülkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto will replace them for 2025.
Mercedes Reserve Driver (2025)
In December 2024, it was announced that Bottas would return to Mercedes as a reserve driver for 2025.
Other Racing Activities
Rallying
In January 2019, Bottas competed in the Arctic Rally. He won a stage and finished fifth overall. In December 2019, he won the Rallycircuit Côte d'Azur. In 2020, Bottas raced in the Arctic Lapland Rally again. He drove a Citroën DS3 WRC car and finished ninth. In January 2021, Bottas competed in his third Arctic Lapland Rally. He finished sixth overall.
Race of Champions
Bottas was supposed to race in the 2022 Race of Champions with Mika Häkkinen. But he had to withdraw at the last minute. Bottas then competed in the 2023 event with Häkkinen. They represented Finland but were knocked out. In the Champion of Champions tournament, Bottas was knocked out by Tom Kristensen.
Other Ventures
Business Interests
In March 2021, Bottas became a co-owner of the ice hockey team Lahti Pelicans in Finland. He bought a 10 percent share. Bottas also co-owns a coffee roastery called Kahiwa Coffee Roasters in Lahti. In April 2022, Bottas launched Oath, a premium gin, with his girlfriend Tiffany Cromwell.
Gravel Cycling
Bottas is a co-founder of FNLD GRVL. This is a gravel cycling event in Lahti, Finland. He organizes it with his girlfriend Tiffany Cromwell and American cyclist Amy Charity. In 2024, Bottas raced in the men's 35–39 age group at the UCI Gravel World Championships in Belgium. He finished 134th out of 233 riders.
Helping Others
In 2017, Bottas started the Valtteri Bottas Duathlon. This is an annual sports event in Finland that raises money for charity.
Personal Life
On 11 September 2016, Bottas married his long-time girlfriend, Emilia Pikkarainen. She is a Finnish Olympic swimmer. They later separated in November 2019. Since February 2020, Bottas has been in a relationship with Australian cyclist Tiffany Cromwell. Bottas lives in Monaco. He also has a lake house in Finland.
