Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Formula One, or F1, is the top level of open-wheeled auto racing. It is managed by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA). The word "formula" means a set of rules that all cars and drivers must follow.

A Formula One season has many races around the world. These races are called Grands Prix. They usually happen on special race tracks. Sometimes, they are held on closed city streets.

Each Grand Prix event lasts three days. Drivers have practice sessions. Then, they have a qualifying session to decide where they will start the main race on Sunday. Some events also have a shorter "sprint" race on Saturday.

Grands Prix are often named after the country, region, or city where they take place. If a country hosts more than one race in a year, the races will have different names. At the end of the season, the results from all Grands Prix decide two champions: one for drivers and one for constructors.

The rules for how long a Grand Prix race should be have changed over time. From 1950 to 1957, races were longer than 300 km (190 mi) or lasted over three hours. In 1958, races were set to be between 300 and 500 km (190 and 310 mi) or two hours long.

Since 1989, most races must be at least 305 km (190 mi) long. This includes the formation lap before the race starts. The Monaco Grand Prix is a special case; it is shorter, at least 260 km (160 mi). No race can last more than two hours if it runs without stopping. From 2021, the longest a race can last, even with stops, is three hours.

The British Grand Prix and Italian Grand Prix are the most common F1 races. Each has been held 74 times since 1950. The Monaco Grand Prix has been held 69 times, always on the same track, the Circuit de Monaco.

Italy's Monza Circuit has hosted the most Grands Prix on any single track, with 73 races. The Circuit de Monaco is second with 69 events. The Silverstone Circuit in the United Kingdom is third with 58 races.

Some countries have hosted two Grands Prix in one season. Italy has hosted the most Grands Prix overall, with 105 races since 1950. Morocco has only hosted one Grand Prix. The newest race added to the F1 calendar was the Las Vegas Grand Prix in 2023.

As of the 2024 Chinese Grand Prix Grand Prix, there have been 1,106 World Championship races. These races have taken place over 75 seasons in 34 countries. They have used 54 different race names and 77 different race tracks. This number includes the Indianapolis 500 races from 1950 to 1960. Even though they were not called Grands Prix, they were part of the World Championships. The 1950 British Grand Prix Grand Prix was the very first Formula One World Championship race.
