List of Formula One circuits facts for kids
Formula One, or F1, is the top level of open-wheeled auto racing. It's managed by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), which is the world's main motorsport group. The "formula" in the name means a special set of rules that all cars and teams must follow.
A Formula One season has many races, called Grands Prix. These races usually happen on special tracks built just for racing. Sometimes, they are held on closed city streets. The results from each race help decide two yearly champions: one for drivers (World Drivers' Championship) and one for teams (World Constructors' Championship).
This list shows all the tracks that have hosted World Championship races since 1950.
History of F1 Circuits
The very first World Championship Grand Prix was held in 1950 at Silverstone in the UK. Since then, 77 different tracks have hosted a Grand Prix.
Many famous old tracks, like Nürburgring, Spa-Francorchamps, and Monza, have hosted races using different layouts over time. For example, the first World Championship race at Nürburgring used a very long track, about 22.835 km (14.189 mi). But because of safety worries, newer races there use a shorter, safer track.
In the early days, most Formula One tracks were in Europe. As the sport grew, new tracks were built in Asia and America. Almost half of the 20 tracks that hosted a Grand Prix in 2012 were not on the F1 calendar before 1999.
The Autodromo Nazionale Monza in Italy has hosted the most World Championship races. It only missed one season, in 1980. The Las Vegas Strip Circuit in the USA became the 77th track to host a Grand Prix in 2023.
The longest track ever to host a Grand Prix was the Pescara Circuit in Italy. It was 25.800 km (16.031 mi) long and hosted the 1957 Pescara Grand Prix. This race was only part of the World Championship once, and Stirling Moss won it.
Some tracks have used different layouts for Grands Prix. The table below shows the most recent layout used for each track.
Formula One Race Tracks
* | These are the tracks used in the 2024 season. |
- The "Circuit" column uses the name the track had when it last hosted a Formula One race.
- The "Map" column shows a picture of the track's layout. For current tracks, it's the latest layout. For past tracks, it's the last layout used.
- The "Type" column tells you what kind of track it is: "street" means it's on closed city roads, "road" means it uses a mix of public roads and a special track, and "race" means it's a permanent race track.
- The "Last length used" shows how long the track was when Formula One last raced there.
- The "Direction" column shows if cars race clockwise or anti-clockwise on the track.
- The "Turns" column shows how many corners the track had in its last F1 layout.
