Silverstone is a village in Northamptonshire, England. It's located about 4 miles (6 km) from Towcester. Bigger cities like Northampton, Milton Keynes, and Banbury are about 12 miles (19 km) away. In 2011, about 2,176 people lived here. A main road, the A43, now goes around the village, not through it.

The name 'Silverstone' likely comes from an old English name. It probably means 'Saewulf's farm' or 'Sigewulf's settlement'. Silverstone is famous for the Silverstone Circuit, a major racetrack. This circuit is the home of the British Grand Prix and sits right on the border between Northamptonshire and Buckinghamshire.

The village is mentioned in the Domesday Book from 1086. Back then, it was called Silvestone and Selvestone.

Silverstone Circuit: Home of Racing

The Silverstone Circuit is a very famous racetrack. It's located about half a mile (0.8 km) south of Silverstone village. This circuit used to be a Royal Air Force bomber base during World War II. Today, it's known as the traditional home of the British Grand Prix. This is a huge Formula One race that brings in over 300,000 visitors every year!

Learning at the Track

In September 2013, the Silverstone University Technical College opened at the circuit. This college helps students learn skills for careers in engineering and motorsports.

Business and Technology Hub

Right next to the Silverstone Circuit is a business area called Silverstone Park. This park focuses on engineering and high-tech activities. Over 80 different companies are based here.

  • Some of the companies include Envision Racing, David Brown Automotive, and Delta Motorsport.
  • Ducati UK Ltd also has a base here.
  • The National College for Motorsport is located here too.

Silverstone Park also has the UK's only special facility for checking measurements in manufacturing. This facility is managed by Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence, which works with Red Bull Formula 1.

Formula One Teams in Silverstone

Silverstone is also home to the Aston Martin Formula One racing team. This team has had a few different names over the years, including Racing Point, Force India, and Jordan Grand Prix.

Village History and Local Life

Silverstone has a long history. In the Middle Ages, the village was known for its timber trade. People would cut wood from the nearby Whittlewood Forest using a method called coppicing. Today, a woodyard called Linnell Brothers still operates in the village.

St. Michael's Church, Silverstone

Silverstone has had a church building since at least the year 1200. The original medieval church was replaced around 1780 with a new building in the Georgian style. This church was made bigger in 1841 and again in 1852.

However, the entire church was taken down in the 1880s. It was replaced by the church you see today, the Church of England parish church of Saint Michael. This church was designed by James Piers St Aubyn in the Gothic Revival style and finished in 1884.

On the north side of the churchyard, you can still see the remains of old medieval fish ponds.

Local Places to Visit

The village has one public house, which is like a local pub or inn. It's called the White Horse Inn.
