The Detroit Grand Prix is an exciting car racing event. It takes place in Detroit, Michigan, USA. This race was once part of the famous Formula One series from 1982 to 1988. Since 1988, it has been a part of the IndyCar Series.

In 1982, the USA made history. It became the first country to host three World Championship Grand Prix races in one year. Besides the US GP West and Caesars Palace GP, Detroit joined in. The new race was held on a street course in the city's Renaissance Center.

The first race track in Detroit had seventeen turns. It was about 4 kilometers (2.493 miles) long. The track even went through a tunnel and crossed a railroad line! Plans were made to move the race to Belle Isle in 1989. However, an agreement couldn't be reached. So, the Grand Prix moved to Phoenix instead.

After Formula One left, another racing series called CART took over the Detroit race. They used almost the same track. In 1992, the race finally moved to Belle Isle. This is an island in the Detroit River. The race was canceled after 2001. But it returned in 2007 and 2008. The Detroit Grand Prix came back again in 2012. It has been a regular part of the IndyCar series schedule ever since.
