The Pedralbes Circuit (which in Spanish is called Circuito de Pedralbes) was a famous street racing track in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. It was about 6.3 kilometers (3.9 miles) long.

This circuit first opened in 1946 in the western part of Barcelona, in an area called Pedralbes. Drivers and fans really liked it because it had wide streets and big, sweeping turns. It was known for being a fast and exciting track.

Major Races at Pedralbes

The Pedralbes Circuit hosted some important races during its time. It was home to the Penya Rhin Grand Prix four times. These races happened in 1946, 1948, 1950, and 1954.

The circuit also welcomed the exciting Spanish Grand Prix in both 1951 and 1954. These were big events in the world of Formula One racing.

Why Pedralbes Closed

Sadly, the Pedralbes Circuit stopped being used for racing after 1955. This was because of new, stricter safety rules that came into place. These rules were introduced after a very serious accident at the 1955 Le Mans disaster race.

Because of these new safety requirements, the Pedralbes Circuit was permanently closed as a racing venue. It was no longer considered safe enough for the high speeds of motor racing.

Fastest Laps at the Circuit

Over the years, many skilled drivers set impressive lap records at Pedralbes. Here are some of the fastest official race laps:

  • In 1954, during the 1954 Spanish Grand Prix, Alberto Ascari from Italy set a record in his Lancia D50 car. His fastest lap was 2 minutes and 20.400 seconds.
  • In 1951, at the 1951 Spanish Grand Prix, Juan Manuel Fangio from Argentina was incredibly fast. He drove an Alfa Romeo 159 and completed a lap in just 2 minutes and 16.930 seconds.
  • Earlier, in 1946 and 1948, Luigi Villoresi from Italy set a record of 1 minute and 46.000 seconds. He did this in a Maserati 8CL and a Maserati 4CLT/48.
