What's in a Name?
At first, people called this area "Noida Extension" because it was next to Noida. Later, the Greater Noida Authority decided to officially call it 'Greater Noida West'.
A City's Journey: How Greater Noida Grew
In the early 1980s, the Indian government realized that Delhi was growing too fast. To help manage this growth, they planned to build new residential and industrial areas around the capital. Before Greater Noida, two other areas were developed: Gurgaon in Haryana and Noida in Uttar Pradesh.
Greater Noida covers about 380 square kilometers and includes 124 villages. Noida was planned to handle population growth for 20-25 years. However, many people moved from Delhi, causing Noida to become crowded in just 15 years.
Because of this, the government of Uttar Pradesh decided to build another city. This new city would be an extension of Noida but with even better planning. The goal was to create a world-class town about 25 kilometers from Noida. They even planned a railway station near Boraki and an international airport. This was to help Greater Noida become a self-sufficient city.
During the 1990s, the area known as Noida extension became Greater Noida. The Greater Noida Authority oversees the city's development. Greater Noida is connected to Agra by the six-lane Yamuna Expressway. The Buddh International Circuit here has hosted major racing events like the Indian Grand Prix and the Indian MotoGP.
The roads in Greater Noida are wide, with special service lanes. The different parts of the city are named using letters from the Greek alphabet, like Alpha, Beta, and Gamma. All the cables and utilities are built underground. The main GNIDA office is in Gamma II sector. Near it is the historic village of Rampur Jagir, where the revolutionary Pandit Ram Prasad Bismil once lived. A park called "Amar Shaheed Pt. Ram Prasad Bismil Udyan" is named after him.
Greater Noida has also hosted the Auto Expo (a big motor show) several times at the India Expo Mart.

It is close to Delhi and is part of the larger National Capital Region (NCR). Greater Noida West covers almost 3,635 hectares and is about 4-5 km from Sector 121 Noida. It includes 16 villages like Khairpur Gurjar and Bisrakh.
