History of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix
The very first Formula One race in Azerbaijan was actually called the 2016 European Grand Prix. It happened in 2016 on the same Baku City Circuit.
A year later, in 2017, the first official Azerbaijan Grand Prix was held. This race took place on June 25. It was one of five street circuit races that year. Other famous street races include those in Singapore and Monaco. The first winner of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix was Daniel Ricciardo from the Red Bull team. This was his first win of the 2017 season.
The 2018 Azerbaijan Grand Prix happened on April 29. It was the fourth race of the season. Lewis Hamilton won this race.
The 2019 Azerbaijan Grand Prix was held on April 28. It was also the fourth race of the season. Valtteri Bottas was the winner. In March 2020, the race was put on hold because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Later that year, it was completely cancelled.
The 2021 Azerbaijan Grand Prix was the sixth race of the season. Sergio Pérez won this race. The 2022 Azerbaijan Grand Prix was won by Max Verstappen.
The 2023 Azerbaijan Grand Prix was special. It was the first Grand Prix to use a new race format. This format included a new qualifying session called "sprint shootout." This session decided the starting positions for one of the six sprint races in the 2023 season. Sergio Pérez made history by winning the Azerbaijan Grand Prix twice. He won in 2021 and again in 2023. He also won the sprint race in 2023.
