Lando Norris, born on November 13, 1999, is a British race car driver. He competes in Formula One for the McLaren team. In 2024, Lando finished second in the Formula One World Drivers' Championship with McLaren. He has won several Grand Prix races during his career.
Lando was born in Bristol, England, and grew up in Glastonbury. His father is English, and his mother is Belgian. He started kart racing when he was eight years old. He had a very successful karting career, winning the Karting World Championship in 2014. After karting, Lando moved into junior racing series.
He won his first championship in 2015 in the MSA Formula. In 2016, he won the Toyota Racing Series, Formula Renault Eurocup, and Formula Renault NEC. He also received the Autosport BRDC Award that year. Lando won the FIA Formula 3 European Championship in 2017. He then finished second in the FIA Formula 2 Championship in 2018.
Lando joined the McLaren Driver Development Programme in 2017. He made his Formula One debut with McLaren in 2019. His first podium finish and fastest lap came at the 2020 Austrian Grand Prix. He achieved his first pole position at the 2021 Russian Grand Prix. In 2024, Lando won his first Grand Prix race at the Miami Grand Prix. He won three more races that year and finished second in the World Drivers' Championship. In 2025, he has won more races, including his home race in Britain. He is currently in a close title battle with his teammate Oscar Piastri.
As of today, Lando Norris has achieved 5 race wins, 10 pole positions, 15 fastest laps, and 30 podiums in Formula One. He is signed to race for McLaren until at least the end of the 2027 season.
Lando Norris's Early Life
Lando Norris was born on November 13, 1999, in Bristol, England. His father, Adam Norris, was a successful businessman. His mother, Cisca Norris, is from Belgium. Lando has three siblings: two younger sisters and an older brother, Oliver. Oliver also competed in karting for a while.
Lando holds both British and Belgian citizenship. He can speak a little bit of Flemish Dutch. When he was very young, Lando tried horse riding, quad biking, and motorcycle riding. He became interested in karting after his father took him to watch a race when he was seven. Lando studied physics and mathematics with a private tutor. He looks up to Valentino Rossi, a famous motorcycle racer, as an inspiration.
Lando Norris's Junior Racing Career
Karting Success (2008–2014)
Lando started his racing journey at age eight. He won pole position in his very first national race. In 2013, he competed in the KF-Junior class. He won the CIK-FIA European Championship and the CIK-FIA International Super Cup. The next year, he won the CIK-FIA World Championship in the KF class. This made him the youngest world champion in that category.
Ginetta Junior Championship (2014)
In 2014, Lando began racing cars in the Ginetta Junior Championship. This was a racing series that supported the British Touring Car Championship. He finished third in the championship. He won four races and also took home the Rookie Cup.
Formula 4 Racing (2015)
In 2015, Lando joined Carlin Motorsport for the new MSA Formula Championship. This series is now known as the F4 British Championship. Lando won eight races, got ten pole positions, and stood on the podium fifteen times. He won the championship that year. He also raced a few times in the ADAC and Italian Formula 4 championships. There, he earned six podium finishes in eight races.
Formula Three and Formula Renault 2.0 (2016–2017)
In January 2016, Lando went to New Zealand to race in the Toyota Racing Series. He won six races, including the New Zealand Grand Prix, and became the champion. After that, he raced in Europe in the Formula Renault 2.0 category. He won both the Eurocup and the Northern European Cup series. He had eleven race wins in total.
Lando also raced part-time in the BRDC British Formula 3 Championship. He won four races out of eleven. In October, he raced in the final round of the European Formula 3 Championship. This was to get ready for the Macau Grand Prix. He finished 11th in the main race in Macau.
In 2017, Lando raced full-time with Carlin in the 2017 European Formula 3 Championship. He faced strong competition but finished on the podium in twenty of the thirty races. This included nine wins and eight pole positions. He won the championship with two races left, marking his fifth racing title in four years. He also finished second in the Macau Grand Prix that year.
FIA Formula 2 Championship (2017–2018)
Formula 2 Debut (2017)
After the Macau Grand Prix, Lando made his FIA Formula 2 debut. He raced for Campos Racing in the last round of the 2017 season.
Runner-up in Formula 2 (2018)
Lando competed full-time in the 2018 FIA Formula 2 Championship with Carlin. He won the first race of the season in Bahrain from pole position. This was his only win that season. However, he consistently scored points and podium finishes. He led the championship for a while before George Russell passed him. Lando finished the season in second place overall.
Lando Norris's Formula One Career
In February 2017, Lando joined the McLaren Driver Development Programme. This program helps young drivers become Formula One stars. Later that year, he tested for McLaren and set the second-fastest lap. In late 2017, Lando became McLaren's official test and reserve driver for the 2018 season. He took part in his first official practice session at the Belgian Grand Prix. He also drove in six more practice sessions that year.
Racing for McLaren (2019–Present)
Rookie Season (2019)
Lando signed to drive for McLaren in the 2019 Formula One World Championship. His teammate was Carlos Sainz Jr.. He started his first race, the Australian Grand Prix, in eighth place. He scored his first Formula One points by finishing sixth in the next race, the Bahrain Grand Prix. He had to retire from a few races due to collisions or car problems.
At the French Grand Prix, he was set to finish seventh but had hydraulic problems and ended up ninth. He matched his best result with a sixth-place finish at the Austrian Grand Prix. At the Belgian Grand Prix, he was in fifth place but had a power failure on the last lap, finishing eleventh. He ended his first Formula One season in eleventh place with 49 points. Lando signed a new contract to stay with McLaren until at least 2022.
First Podium Finish (2020)
At the first race of the 2020 season, the Austrian Grand Prix, Lando started fourth. He moved up to third after a penalty for Lewis Hamilton. In the final moments of the race, Hamilton received a penalty. Lando drove the fastest lap of the race, finishing just 4.802 seconds behind Hamilton. This allowed Lando to claim his first-ever podium finish in Formula One. He became one of the youngest drivers to achieve a podium.
At the Styrian Grand Prix, he started sixth but had a grid penalty. He passed three cars in the last two laps to finish fifth. He called this "one of the best races of [his] career." Lando later apologized for some careless comments he made about other drivers, stating he had not shown enough respect. He finished the season ninth in the drivers' championship with 97 points. McLaren finished third in the constructors' championship.
First Pole Position (2021)
Lando continued with McLaren for the 2021 season, with Daniel Ricciardo as his new teammate. He finished fourth at the first race in Bahrain. At the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, he started seventh but drove brilliantly to finish third, earning his second podium. He got another podium at the Monaco Grand Prix.
At the Austrian Grand Prix, Lando started second, just 0.048 seconds behind Max Verstappen. He finished third, getting his third podium of the season. At the Italian Grand Prix, Lando finished second behind his teammate Ricciardo. This was McLaren's first one-two finish (where their two cars finish first and second) since 2010.
Lando achieved his first Formula One pole position (starting from the very front of the grid) at the Russian Grand Prix. He led the race for many laps. When rain started, he decided to stay on dry-weather tires, but the rain got worse. This allowed Lewis Hamilton to pass him. Lando had to pit for different tires and finished seventh. He scored points in the remaining races and finished sixth in the World Drivers' Championship, his best result at the time.
2022 Season
In February 2022, Lando signed a contract to stay with McLaren until at least 2025. He achieved McLaren's only podium finish of the season with third place at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. At the Miami Grand Prix, he was involved in a crash that brought out the safety car.
Despite feeling unwell with tonsillitis, Lando finished sixth at the Monaco Grand Prix and set the fastest lap. He started seventeenth at the Belgian Grand Prix due to a penalty but recovered to finish twelfth. His best result after the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix was fourth place at the Singapore Grand Prix. He finished seventh in the Drivers' Championship with 122 points.
Seven Podiums in 2023
Lando continued with McLaren in 2023, with Oscar Piastri as his new teammate. The first few races were challenging for McLaren. At the Australian Grand Prix, McLaren scored their first points of the season, with Lando finishing sixth. He qualified third at the Spanish Grand Prix but had contact with Lewis Hamilton on the first lap. He received a penalty at the Canadian Grand Prix for slowing down too much in the pit lane.
McLaren brought big upgrades to Lando's car for the Austrian Grand Prix. Lando qualified fourth and finished fourth in the race. Even more success came at the British Grand Prix, where Lando qualified second. He led the race for four laps and then held off Lewis Hamilton to finish second. This was McLaren's first podium at Silverstone Circuit since 2010. He then finished second again at the Hungarian Grand Prix, his first time getting two podiums in a row. He accidentally broke Max Verstappen's trophy during the celebrations, but it was later replaced.
Lando achieved four consecutive podiums starting with the Singapore Grand Prix. He finished second at the Japanese Grand Prix and was promoted to second at the United States Grand Prix after a penalty for another driver. He also finished second at the São Paulo Grand Prix. His only retirement of the season was at the Las Vegas Grand Prix after a crash. Lando finished sixth in the Drivers' Championship with 205 points.
First Wins and Title Challenge (2024)
Before the 2024 season, Lando signed a new contract with McLaren. He took his first podium of the season at the Australian Grand Prix, finishing third. At the Chinese Grand Prix, he qualified fourth and finished second. At the Miami Grand Prix, Lando qualified fifth. He took the lead after other drivers pitted and a safety car helped him keep it. He held off Max Verstappen to claim his first-ever Grand Prix victory after 110 races. This tied a record for the most podiums before a first win.
After Miami, Lando achieved five more podiums before the summer break. He finished on the podium at Imola, Canada, and Spain, where he started from pole position. He believed he was a championship rival to Verstappen. He also got podiums at the British Grand Prix and Hungary.
After the summer break, Lando won his second race at the Dutch Grand Prix. He started from pole position and took the lead back from Verstappen to win by a large margin. He then took pole position for the Italian Grand Prix, becoming the first McLaren driver since Lewis Hamilton in 2012 to have consecutive poles. He finished third in that race. At the Singapore Grand Prix, Lando took his fifth pole position of the season and won the race by 20 seconds. He also won the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, his fourth win of the season. This victory helped McLaren win their first constructors' title since 1998. Lando finished the 2024 season as the runner-up in the World Drivers' Championship.
2025: Title Battle with Piastri
McLaren started the 2025 season as top contenders. Lando shared that he had learned a lot to help him compete for the World Drivers' Championship. He took pole position for the first race, the Australian Grand Prix. He defended his lead from teammate Oscar Piastri and Max Verstappen in wet conditions to win the race and take the championship lead.
At the Chinese Grand Prix, he finished second behind Piastri. In Japan, he finished second to Verstappen, who then closed the championship gap to just one point. Lando increased his lead to three points over Piastri with a third-place finish at the Bahrain Grand Prix. He had received a penalty for a false start in that race.
Lando crashed during qualifying for the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. He recovered to finish fourth in the race, but dropped behind Piastri in the standings. He won the Miami sprint race after a safety car helped him. He then finished second to Piastri in the main race. He finished second again in Emilia Romagna before winning the Monaco Grand Prix from pole position. This reduced Piastri's lead to three points. He then finished second to Piastri in Spain.
At the Canadian Grand Prix, Lando collided with Piastri while battling for fourth place. He had to retire from the race and apologized for the mistake. He said he couldn't afford to make such errors if he wanted to win the title. Lando then took pole position in Austria and held off Piastri to win. He also won his first home Grand Prix in Britain, benefiting from a penalty for Piastri. He finished second to Piastri in the Belgium Grand Prix. In Hungary, he won from fourth place, closing the gap to Piastri to nine points. Lando retired from the Dutch Grand Prix due to an oil leak, which dropped him 34 points behind Piastri. In Italy, he battled Verstappen for the lead and finished second after a team order allowed him to pass Piastri. In Azerbaijan, Lando finished seventh and gained six points on Piastri.
Other Racing Adventures
Endurance Racing
Lando tried endurance racing for the first time in 2018. He joined United Autosports for the 24 Hours of Daytona race. He raced alongside Fernando Alonso and Phil Hanson. They finished thirteenth in their class. Lando even led several laps in wet conditions during the race. Fernando Alonso praised Lando's "impressive speed" and teamwork.
Sim Racing
Lando also enjoys sim racing, which is racing in video games. He competed for Team Redline in several iRacing events in 2019. He and Max Verstappen won the Spa 24 Special Event together. Lando also won a round of the 2020 IndyCar iRacing Challenge. He competed in the 2020 24 Hours of Le Mans Virtual with Verstappen, but they had to retire due to technical problems.
Other Activities
Helping Others
Lando is also involved in charity work. In March 2020, he raised over $12,000 for the COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund. This fund supports the World Health Organization. He did this during an online live streaming event on Twitch.
In 2020, Lando started Team Quadrant. This is an esports team that also creates online content and sells clothing. Lando has talked about how he struggled with his mental health when he first started in Formula One at age 19. He encourages people to get help from the Mind charity, which he works with through McLaren.
LN Kart Brand
In September 2021, Lando launched his own kart racing brand called LN Racing Kart. The karts are made by OTK Kart Group. Ricky Flynn Motorsport, the team Lando won the Karting World Championship with, helps run the operations. The LN Racing Kart chassis won its first World Cup in 2024.
Lando Norris's Personal Life
When Lando first started in Formula One in 2019, he lived in Woking, near the McLaren team's headquarters. In 2022, he moved to Monte Carlo. Lando dated Portuguese model Luísa Oliveira from 2021 to 2022. He has been dating Portuguese model and actress Margarida Corceiro since 2023. Outside of racing, Lando enjoys playing golf. He has played in celebrity golf events and was invited to play at Augusta National after winning the 2024 Miami Grand Prix.
