Lando Norris (born 13 November 1999) is a British racing driver. He competes in Formula One for the McLaren team. In 2024, Norris finished second in the Formula One World Drivers' Championship with McLaren. He has won five Grand Prix races during his seven seasons in Formula One.
Norris was born in Bristol, England, and grew up in Glastonbury. He started kart racing at age seven. After a very successful karting career, where he won the Karting World Championship in 2014, Norris moved up to junior racing series. He quickly won several championships, including the 2015 MSA Formula Championship and the FIA Formula 3 European Championship in 2017.
He joined the McLaren Young Driver Programme in 2017. Norris made his Formula One debut with McLaren in 2019. He achieved his first podium finish in 2020 and his first pole position in 2021. In 2024, Norris won his first Formula One race at the 2024 Miami Grand Prix. He then won three more races that year, finishing as the runner-up in the World Drivers' Championship.
As of the 2019 Monaco Grand Prix, Norris has achieved five race wins, 10 pole positions, 15 fastest laps, and 30 podiums in Formula One. He is signed to race with McLaren until at least the end of the 2027 season.
About Lando Norris
Lando Norris was born on 13 November 1999 in Bristol, England. His father, Adam Norris, was a pensions manager. His mother, Cisca, is from Belgium. Lando has three siblings: two younger sisters and an older brother, Oliver. Oliver also competed in karting for a while.
Lando has both British and Belgian citizenship. He can speak a little bit of Flemish Dutch, which is spoken in Belgium. When he was young, he tried horse riding, quad biking, and motorcycle riding. He got into karting after his father took him to watch a karting championship when he was seven.
Norris went to Millfield School in Street, Somerset. He left school early to focus on racing. He studied physics and mathematics with a special tutor. His family moved to Glastonbury to help him with his racing career. He has said that famous motorcycle racer Valentino Rossi inspired him.
Early Racing Career
Lando Norris started his racing journey at seven years old. He quickly showed his talent by getting a pole position at his very first national event.
Karting Success
In 2013, Norris competed in the KF-Junior karting class. He won the CIK-FIA European Championship and the CIK-FIA International Super Cup. He also won the WSK Euro Series. The next year, in 2014, he became the youngest ever Karting World Champion in the KF class. He achieved this with Ricky Flynn Motorsport.
First Car Races
In 2014, Norris began racing cars in the 2014 Ginetta Junior Championship. This series supports the British Touring Car Championship. He finished third in the championship and won four races. He also won the Rookie Cup for new drivers.
Formula 4 Racing
In 2015, Norris joined Carlin Motorsport to race in the new 2015 MSA Formula Championship (now called the F4 British Championship). He had an amazing season, winning eight races, getting ten pole positions, and fourteen podium finishes. He won the championship title.
He also raced a few times in the German ADAC and Italian Formula 4 championships with Mücke Motorsport. In these races, he earned six podiums in just eight starts.
Formula 3 and Formula Renault

In 2016, Norris went to New Zealand to race in the 2016 Toyota Racing Series. He won six races, including the 2016 New Zealand Grand Prix, and became the champion.
He then raced in Europe in the Formula Renault 2.0 series with Josef Kaufmann Racing. He won both the Eurocup and Northern European Cup titles. He took eleven race wins in total. He also raced part-time in the 2016 BRDC British Formula 3 Championship, winning four races.

In 2017, Norris raced full-time in the 2017 FIA Formula 3 European Championship with Carlin. He had a fantastic season, finishing on the podium in twenty of the thirty races. This included nine wins and eight pole positions. He won the championship with two races left, making it his fifth racing title in four years.
Formula 2 Racing
After his Formula 3 success, Norris made his Formula 2 debut at the end of 2017. He then competed full-time in the 2018 FIA Formula 2 Championship with Carlin.
Norris won the very first race of the season from pole position in Bahrain. This was his only win that year. He consistently scored points and podiums, leading the championship for a while. He finished the season as the runner-up, in second place.
Formula One Career
In February 2017, Lando Norris joined the McLaren Driver Development Programme. This program helps young drivers become Formula One stars. Later that year, he tested a McLaren F1 car and showed great speed. In late 2017, he became McLaren's official test and reserve driver for the 2018 season. He took part in several practice sessions during 2018.
Starting with McLaren (2019)
Norris began his Formula One career with McLaren in 2019. His teammate was Carlos Sainz Jr.. He qualified eighth in his first race in Australia and finished twelfth. He scored his first F1 points by finishing sixth in Bahrain.
Throughout his rookie season, Norris showed flashes of speed. He had some bad luck with collisions and car problems, leading to a few retirements. Despite this, he often out-qualified his more experienced teammate. He finished his first F1 season in eleventh place in the drivers' championship with 49 points. McLaren was impressed, and he signed a new contract to stay with the team until 2022.
First Podium Finish (2020)

The 2020 season started well for Norris. At the first race in Austria, he qualified fourth but moved up to third on the grid. In the final moments of the race, he set the fastest lap. This helped him finish close enough to Lewis Hamilton to claim his first-ever Formula One podium finish. He became one of the youngest drivers to achieve a podium.
He continued to show strong performances, including a fifth-place finish in Styria. He had a few tough races with car damage and penalties. However, he finished the season with strong results in Bahrain and Abu Dhabi. His efforts helped McLaren secure third place in the constructors' championship. Norris finished ninth in the drivers' championship with 97 points.
Maiden Pole Position (2021)
Norris stayed with McLaren in 2021, now partnering with Daniel Ricciardo. He started the season well, finishing fourth in Bahrain. At the next race in Emilia Romagna, he finished third, earning his second F1 podium. He got another podium in Monaco.
At the Austrian Grand Prix, Norris qualified second, just behind Max Verstappen. He finished third, getting his third podium of the season. At the Italian Grand Prix, he finished second behind his teammate Ricciardo. This was McLaren's first one-two finish in many years.
Norris achieved his first Formula One pole position in Russia during tricky weather. He led the race for a long time. However, a late rain shower and a tire choice mistake meant he dropped to seventh. He finished the season in sixth place in the drivers' championship, his best result yet, scoring 160 points.
Consistent Performer (2022)
In February 2022, Norris signed a new contract with McLaren, keeping him with the team until at least 2025. The season started slowly for McLaren. However, Norris scored the team's only podium of the year by finishing third in Emilia Romagna.
He continued to score points consistently throughout the season. He finished sixth in Monaco despite feeling unwell. He also had strong finishes in Hungary, Singapore, and Abu Dhabi. Norris ended the season in seventh place in the Drivers' Championship with 122 points.
Seven Podiums (2023)
In 2023, Norris was joined by rookie teammate Oscar Piastri. The start of the season was challenging for McLaren. Norris had some tough races with reliability issues and collisions.
However, McLaren brought major car upgrades for the Austrian Grand Prix. Norris immediately showed improved performance, qualifying fourth and finishing fourth in the race. At the British Grand Prix, he qualified second and finished second, holding off Lewis Hamilton. This was McLaren's first podium at Silverstone in many years.
He continued his strong form with another second-place finish in Hungary. He then achieved four consecutive podiums in Singapore, Japan, and the United States. He finished second in the main race in São Paulo after starting sixth. Norris ended the season with seven podiums. He scored 205 points and finished sixth in the Drivers' Championship.
First Grand Prix Win (2024)
Before the 2024 season, Norris signed another new contract with McLaren. He started the year with a podium in Australia, finishing third. In China, he finished second, marking his fifteenth F1 podium.
At the 2024 Miami Grand Prix, Norris qualified fifth. After other drivers pitted, he took the lead. A safety car helped him keep his position after his own pit stop. He held off Max Verstappen to claim his first-ever Grand Prix victory after 110 races. This was a huge moment in his career.
After Miami, Norris continued to perform strongly, securing five more podiums before the summer break. He took pole position in Spain and Hungary but couldn't convert them into wins. He believed he was a championship contender.
After the summer break, Norris took pole position at the 2024 Dutch Grand Prix. He lost the lead early but reclaimed it and won the race by a large margin. This was his second victory. He then took consecutive pole positions in Italy, a first for him.
Norris secured his third win at the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix from pole position, leading every lap. He took his fourth win of the season at the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, also from pole. This victory helped McLaren win their first constructors' title since 1998. Norris finished the 2024 season as the runner-up in the World Drivers' Championship.
Looking Ahead (2025)
McLaren started 2025 as one of the top teams. Norris took pole position and won the first race in Australia. He also won the sprint race in Miami and the main race in Monaco from pole position. He continues to be a strong contender for the World Drivers' Championship.

Endurance Racing
In 2018, Norris joined United Autosports for the 2018 24 Hours of Daytona endurance race. He raced alongside famous driver Fernando Alonso. Their team finished 13th in their class. Alonso praised Norris's speed and teamwork.
Sim Racing
Norris is also very good at sim racing, which is racing in video games. He competes for Team Redline in various iRacing events. In 2019, he and Max Verstappen won the Spa 24 Special Event in the game. In 2020, Norris won a round of the 2020 IndyCar iRacing Challenge. He also competed in the 2020 24 Hours of Le Mans Virtual with Verstappen.

Helping Others
In March 2020, Norris raised over $12,000 for the COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund. He did this during an online live streaming event on Twitch.
In 2020, he started Team Quadrant. This is an esports team that also creates content and sells clothing.
Norris has spoken openly about his own mental health struggles. He shared that it was tough joining Formula One at 19 with so much attention on him. He works with the Mind charity to help others.
LN Kart Brand
In September 2021, Norris launched his own kart racing brand called LN Racing Kart. This brand makes and sells karts. The karts are made by OTK Kart Group, and Ricky Flynn Motorsport helps run the operations. This is the same team Norris won the Karting World Championship with in 2014.
