Lando Norris (born 13 November 1999) is a British racing driver who competes in Formula One for the McLaren team. He won the Formula One World Drivers' Championship in 2025 with McLaren. He has won many Grand Prix races during his career.
Lando was born in Bristol, England. He grew up in Glastonbury. He started kart racing when he was eight years old. He had a very successful karting career, winning the Karting World Championship in 2014. After karting, he moved into junior racing series. He won several championships, including the 2015 MSA Formula Championship and the FIA Formula 3 European Championship in 2017.
Norris joined the McLaren team in 2019. He made his Formula One debut at the 2019 Australian Grand Prix. He achieved his first podium finish in 2020 at the 2020 Austrian Grand Prix. In 2021, he earned his first pole position at the 2021 Russian Grand Prix. In 2024, Lando achieved his first Formula One win at the 2024 Miami Grand Prix. He finished second in the World Drivers' Championship that year. In 2025, he won seven more races, including his home race in Britain. This led him to win his first World Drivers' Championship.
Lando Norris has achieved 1 World Championship, 5 race wins, 10 pole positions, 15 fastest laps, and 30 podiums in Formula One. He is signed to race with McLaren until at least the end of the 2027 season.
Lando Norris's Early Life
Lando Norris was born on November 13, 1999, in Bristol, England. His father, Adam Norris, was a successful businessman. His mother, Cisca Norris, is from Belgium. Lando has three siblings: an older brother, Oliver, and two younger sisters. Oliver also enjoyed karting when he was younger. Lando has both British and Belgian citizenship.
When he was young, Lando tried different activities like horse riding and quad biking. He became interested in kart racing after his father took him to watch a championship race. He started karting at age seven. Lando went to Millfield School. He later chose to study physics and mathematics with a private tutor. He looks up to famous motorcycle racer Valentino Rossi as an inspiration.
Lando's Junior Racing Career
Karting Champion
Lando began his racing journey in kart racing at eight years old. He quickly showed his talent, taking pole position in his very first national event. In 2013, he won the CIK-FIA European Championship. The next year, in 2014, he became the youngest-ever Karting World Champion in the KF category.
Moving Up to Car Racing
In 2014, Lando started racing cars in the Ginetta Junior Championship. He finished third overall and won the Rookie Cup.
The following year, 2015, he joined Carlin Motorsport for the new F4 British Championship. Lando won this championship with eight wins and ten pole positions. He also raced in some ADAC and Italian Formula 4 races, earning six podiums.
In 2016, Lando continued his winning streak. He won the Toyota Racing Series in New Zealand, including the New Zealand Grand Prix. He also won both the Eurocup and Northern European Cup in Formula Renault 2.0, taking eleven wins and ten consecutive pole positions. He even raced part-time in the BRDC British Formula 3 Championship, winning four races.
In 2017, Lando raced full-time in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship with Carlin. He won nine races and secured the championship title with two races to spare. This was his fifth championship title in just four years!
Formula 2 Challenge
Lando made his debut in FIA Formula 2 at the end of 2017. In 2018, he competed full-time in Formula 2 with Carlin. He won the first race of the season from pole position. He consistently scored points and podium finishes. He finished the season as runner-up in the championship.
Formula One Career
In 2017, Lando joined the McLaren Driver Development Programme. This program helps young drivers prepare for Formula One. He became an official McLaren test and reserve driver for the 2018 season. He participated in several practice sessions that year.
Joining McLaren in 2019
Lando Norris officially joined McLaren for the 2019 Formula One World Championship. He partnered with Carlos Sainz Jr.. He scored his first Formula One points by finishing sixth at the 2019 Bahrain Grand Prix. Throughout his rookie season, he showed great potential. He finished eleventh in the drivers' championship.
First Podium in 2020
The 2020 season started with a bang for Lando. At the 2020 Austrian Grand Prix, he qualified fourth and finished third. This was his first-ever Formula One podium finish! He became one of the youngest drivers to achieve a podium. He finished ninth in the drivers' championship that year.
Maiden Pole Position in 2021
Lando continued with McLaren in 2021, partnering with Daniel Ricciardo. He achieved his second podium at the 2021 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. He also secured his first Formula One pole position at the 2021 Russian Grand Prix. He finished second at the 2021 Italian Grand Prix, helping McLaren achieve a one-two finish. Lando finished sixth in the World Drivers' Championship, his best result at the time.
Consistent Performances in 2022
In February 2022, Lando extended his contract with McLaren until 2025. He achieved McLaren's only podium of the season with a third-place finish at the 2022 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. He consistently scored points throughout the year. He finished seventh in the Drivers' Championship.
Seven Podiums in 2023
Lando continued with McLaren in 2023, joined by rookie Oscar Piastri. After a challenging start to the season, McLaren introduced major car upgrades. Lando quickly showed improved performance. He finished second at his home race, the 2023 British Grand Prix. This was the first of seven podium finishes he achieved that season. He finished sixth in the Drivers' Championship.
First Grand Prix Win in 2024
The 2024 season was a landmark year for Lando. He signed a new multi-year contract with McLaren. At the 2024 Miami Grand Prix, he achieved his maiden Grand Prix victory after 110 races. This was a huge moment for him and the team. He secured three more wins that season. He finished as runner-up in the World Drivers' Championship, just behind Max Verstappen.
He also achieved pole position at the 2024 Dutch Grand Prix and won the race. He took his fifth pole position at the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix and won the race by a large margin. Lando's fourth win of the season came at the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. This victory helped McLaren secure their first Constructors' Championship since 1998.
World Champion in 2025
McLaren started the 2025 season as strong contenders for the championship. Lando took pole position at the 2025 Australian Grand Prix and won the race. He continued to battle for the championship throughout the year with teammate Oscar Piastri and Max Verstappen. He won the 2025 Monaco Grand Prix from pole position.
Lando won his home race, the 2025 British Grand Prix. He also won the 2025 Hungarian Grand Prix and the 2025 Mexico City Grand Prix. After winning the 2025 São Paulo Grand Prix from pole position, he secured his first World Drivers' Championship at the final race in Abu Dhabi.
Other Racing Adventures
Endurance Racing
In 2018, Lando tried endurance racing at the 24 Hours of Daytona. He joined the United Autosports team with Fernando Alonso. They faced some challenges but Lando showed impressive speed, even leading laps in wet conditions.
Sim Racing
Lando also enjoys sim racing, which is racing in video games. He competed in several iRacing events. In 2019, he won the Spa 24 Special Event with Max Verstappen. He also won a round of the 2020 IndyCar iRacing Challenge.
Other Ventures
Helping Others
Lando is also involved in charity work. In 2020, he raised over $12,000 for the COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund through an online live streaming event. He has also worked with the Mind charity to support mental health awareness.
LN Kart
In 2021, Lando launched his own kart racing brand called LN Racing Kart. This brand creates racing karts for young drivers. The karts debuted in international competitions in 2022. In 2024, an LN Racing Kart won its first World Cup in the OK-N class.
Personal Life
At the start of his Formula One career, Lando lived in Woking, England. In 2022, he moved to Monte Carlo. Lando enjoys playing golf and has participated in celebrity events. He is a supporter of the Brazilian football club SE Palmeiras.
