Carlos Sainz Vázquez de Castro (born on September 1, 1994) is a Spanish racing driver. He currently competes in Formula One for Williams. Carlos Sainz Jr. has won four Formula One races over 10 seasons.
Born in Madrid, Spain, Carlos is the son of Carlos Sainz, a famous rally driver who won the World Rally Championship twice. Carlos Jr. started his racing journey in karting in 2006. He quickly showed his talent, winning the Asia-Pacific KF3 title in 2008. He also won the Junior Monaco Kart Cup in 2009.
After karting, Carlos moved up to junior racing series. He won his first championship in the Formula Renault NEC in 2011. In 2014, he won the Formula Renault 3.5 Series championship. These wins helped him join the Red Bull Junior Team, a program that supports young drivers.
Carlos made his Formula One debut in 2015 with Toro Rosso. He later raced for Renault and McLaren. At McLaren, he achieved his first Formula One podium finish in 2019. In 2021, he joined Ferrari. He earned his first Formula One win and pole position at the 2022 British Grand Prix in 2022. He also won races in Singapore (2023), Australia (2024), and Mexico City (2024). For the 2025 season, Carlos will join Williams Racing.
As of the 2019 Monaco Grand Prix, Carlos Sainz has four race wins, six pole positions, four fastest laps, and 27 podiums in Formula One.

About Carlos
Carlos Sainz Vázquez de Castro was born on September 1, 1994, in Madrid, Spain. His father, Carlos Sainz Sr., is a famous rally driver who won the World Rally Championship twice. Carlos Jr. was mentored by his father as he grew up and pursued his dream of F1 racing.
In 2016, Carlos became an ambassador for the legacy of María de Villota. She was a Spanish racing driver who coached him at a driving school in Madrid. Carlos has a star on his helmet to honor her memory. He lives in Monaco and has also lived in Madrid and London. In 2023, he was involved in an incident in Milan where his watch was stolen, but he chased and caught the person responsible.
His Journey to Formula One
Carlos started his racing career in karting in 2006. He quickly became a top kart racer. In 2008, he won the Asia-Pacific KF3 title. The next year, he won the Junior Monaco Kart Cup.
Racing in Junior Series
Carlos joined the Red Bull Junior Team in 2010. This program helps young drivers develop their skills. He raced in Formula BMW Europe in 2010. He even won a race at Silverstone that year.
In 2012, Carlos competed in Formula Three championships. He raced for Carlin and won five races in the British championship. He also achieved podium finishes in the Euro Series.
In 2013, Carlos moved to the GP3 Series. He earned his first GP3 podium in Valencia. The following year, in 2014, he joined Formula Renault 3.5 Series. He had a fantastic season, winning seven races and becoming the champion. This big win helped him get closer to Formula One.
Formula One Career
Carlos got his first chance to drive a Formula One car in July 2013. He drove for both Toro Rosso and Red Bull at a young drivers' test.
Toro Rosso (2015–2017)
Carlos made his Formula One debut with Scuderia Toro Rosso in 2015. His teammate was Max Verstappen. Carlos chose 55 as his race number. He scored points in his first race in Australia. He had some bad luck with retirements due to car issues. However, he finished seventh at the United States Grand Prix, his best result that year.
In 2016, Carlos continued with Toro Rosso. He scored points in several races, including a sixth-place finish in Spain. He was often the main points scorer for his team.
For the 2017 season, Carlos remained with Toro Rosso. He had strong performances, including a career-best fourth place in Singapore. This was a very important race for him.
Renault (2017–2018)
Carlos moved to Renault for the last four races of 2017. He scored points in his first race with the team. In 2018, he continued with Renault. He often qualified in the top ten and scored points. His best finish was fifth place in Azerbaijan.
McLaren (2019–2020)
In 2019, Carlos joined McLaren. He had a tough start with some bad luck in the first few races. But he soon started scoring points regularly. At the 2019 Brazilian Grand Prix, he started last but drove brilliantly to finish third. This was his first ever podium in Formula One!
He continued with McLaren in 2020. He achieved his first fastest lap in Formula One at the Styrian Grand Prix. At the 2020 Italian Grand Prix, he finished second, which was his best result at the time. He ended both 2019 and 2020 seasons in sixth place in the drivers' championship.
Ferrari (2021–2024)
Carlos joined Ferrari in 2021. He quickly adapted to the team and finished fifth in the championship, ahead of his teammate Charles Leclerc. He earned four podiums in his first year with Ferrari.
In 2022, Carlos achieved a huge milestone. At the 2022 British Grand Prix, he took his first Formula One pole position and then went on to win the race! It was a very special moment for him. He also got two more pole positions that year.
The 2023 season saw Carlos take another victory at the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix. This was a big win because it was the only race in 2023 not won by the Red Bull team. He also got another pole position in Italy.
In 2024, Carlos started strong with a podium in Bahrain. He then won the 2024 Australian Grand Prix after recovering from surgery for appendicitis. He also won the 2024 Mexico City Grand Prix from pole position. Carlos left Ferrari at the end of the 2024 season.
Williams (2025–present)
On July 29, 2024, it was announced that Carlos Sainz will join Williams from the 2025 season. He will be teammates with Alexander Albon.
