The Yas Marina Circuit is a famous race track located on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, UAE. It's where the exciting Abu Dhabi Grand Prix takes place every year. The track was designed by a well-known architect named Hermann Tilke.
This circuit is about 30 minutes away from Abu Dhabi, the capital city. It was the second Formula One track built in the Middle East, after the one in Bahrain. The Yas Marina Circuit also hosted the first race for the Australian V8 Supercars series in February 2010.
Track Design
The Yas Marina Circuit was planned to be like an Arabian version of the famous Monaco track. It has 21 turns that wind through the man-made island off the coast of Abu Dhabi.
The track goes past a beautiful marina and even through the Yas Marina Hotel. It also twists through sand dunes, with some long straight parts for high speeds and tight corners that make racing exciting.
The circuit has four main areas for fans to sit: the Main Grandstand, West Grandstand, North Grandstand, and South Grandstand. A cool feature is that part of the pit lane exit goes underneath the track! There's also a Media Center, a Dragster Track, a VIP Tower, and the Ferrari World Theme Park nearby.
- Seating Capacity: 41,093 people
- Area: 161.9 hectares (that's about 400 acres!)
- Length: 5.5 kilometers (about 3.4 miles)
How It Was Built
The Yas Marina Circuit was built by a company called Cebarco-WCT WLL. The circuit has a special lighting system that lets races happen at night. This system is similar to the one at the Losail Circuit in Qatar. The Yas Marina Circuit has the biggest permanent sports venue lighting system in the world!
The track's surface is made from a special type of rock called Graywacke. This rock was brought all the way from a quarry in Shropshire, England. This material is known for giving cars a lot of grip, which helps them go faster around corners. The same material was also used for the track at the Bahrain International Circuit.
On October 7, 2009, the FIA (the group that runs Formula One races) gave the circuit its final approval. This meant it was ready to host Formula One events. Bruno Senna was the very first driver to test out the new circuit.
