Shane Robert van Gisbergen (born May 9, 1989), also known as SVG, is a professional racing driver from New Zealand. He currently races full-time in the NASCAR Cup Series. He drives the No. 88 Chevrolet ZL1 for Trackhouse Racing. He also races part-time in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, driving the No. 9 Chevrolet SS for JR Motorsports.
Shane is well-known for his time in the Supercars Championship. He last drove the No. 97 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 for Triple Eight Race Engineering. He won the Supercars Championship three times: in 2016, 2021, and 2022. With 80 wins and 46 pole positions, van Gisbergen is 4th on the all-time wins list in the Supercars Championship. He has also won the famous Bathurst 1000 race three times (in 2020, 2022, and 2023).
Van Gisbergen also competes in GT Racing. He won the 2016 Liqui Moly Bathurst 12 Hour with Alvaro Parente and Jonathon Webb. They drove a McLaren 650S GT3. He also won the 2016 Blancpain GT Series Endurance Cup. He finished 3rd overall in the 2016 Intercontinental GT Challenge. In 2015, he came in second place at the 2015 24 Hours of Daytona in the GTD class.
He made a big splash in the NASCAR Cup Series by winning his very first race. This happened at the 2023 Grant Park 220 in Chicago. He was the first driver to win their NASCAR Cup Series debut since Indy car driver Johnny Rutherford in 1963. This made him only the seventh driver in history to do so. He was also the first New Zealander to win a Cup Series race. He is now the winningest non-American driver in the NASCAR Cup Series.
Shane van Gisbergen and Paul Morris are the only drivers to have won all three major car racing events at Mount Panorama. These events are the Bathurst 1000, Bathurst 6 Hour, and Bathurst 12 Hour.

Early Racing Career in New Zealand
Shane van Gisbergen started racing at a young age. From 1998 to 2004, he competed in Motocross, Quarter Midgets, and karts.
Formula Racing Success
In the 2004/2005 New Zealand Formula First Championship, he finished third. He also won the Rookie of the Year award that season. He had previously earned a Speedsport Star of Tomorrow Scholarship. In 2005/06, he won the New Zealand Formula Ford Championship. He also earned another Rookie of the Year title. He then finished second in the 2006/07 Toyota Racing Series.
SuperTourers and Grand Prix Wins
In 2014, van Gisbergen won the BNT NZ Supertourers Hankook Super Series championship. He co-drove with Simon Evans. Shane won 7 of the 9 races in the Endurance rounds. This included winning all races at the Fuchs 500 weekend at Pukekohe Park Raceway. He famously won race #3 from one lap down.
In 2021, van Gisbergen won the New Zealand Grand Prix. This event is usually for drivers from all over the world. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, only New Zealand drivers could compete. Van Gisbergen entered as a special guest. In 2023, he raced in the South Island Endurance Series. He drove a Brabham BT62 with Dwayne Carter. They had to retire from the race early due to a loose wheel.
Supercars Championship Journey
Shane van Gisbergen started his V8 Supercar career in 2007 with Team Kiwi Racing. He was the 200th driver to start a V8 Supercar race. This happened at the Jim Beam 400 at Oran Park Raceway. After showing great skill, he joined Stone Brothers Racing in 2008. He stayed with them for five seasons, finishing fourth in the championship in 2011.
In late 2012, he announced he was leaving V8 Supercars. But in January, it was revealed he was moving to Tekno Autosports for the 2013 season. This move was very successful. Van Gisbergen finished second in the championship in 2014.
Bathurst 1000 Challenges
Van Gisbergen has always been fast at the famous Bathurst 1000 race. In 2009, he was leading until a long pit stop caused his car not to start. This cost him many positions. A similar problem happened in the 2014 race. With only 10 laps left, his car stalled, and the starter motor failed. This likely cost him a win, and he finished 16th. He had started the 2014 race from pole position, which was his first at the event.
Joining Triple Eight Race Engineering

In 2016, van Gisbergen moved to the Triple Eight Race Engineering team. He joined two very successful drivers: Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes. He won his first race for the team at the Tasmania SuperSprint in 2016. Alexandre Prémat became his co-driver for the Enduro Cup. They won the 2016 Enduro Cup, with three second-place finishes. Prémat also got his first race victory at the 2016 Castrol Gold Coast 600. They were the first non-Australian driver pair to win. At Pukekohe, van Gisbergen became the first New Zealander to win the trophy named after Jason Richards. He won eight races that season and became the champion.
In 2017, Whincup and van Gisbergen teamed up again. He started his title defense with two wins in Adelaide. However, he finished 4th in the championship that year.
In 2018, van Gisbergen won both races in Adelaide, driving a Holden Commodore ZB. He also won at Townsville and the Sydney SuperNight 300. At Tailem Bend, he dominated the first race at The Bend Motorsport Park. He finished second at Sandown with Earl Bamber. He also won at the Auckland SuperSprint at Pukekohe.
In the final round of 2018 at Newcastle, he won race 30. But he received a 25-second penalty after the race for a refueling issue. This dropped him to fifth place. He finished second in the championship behind Scott McLaughlin.
In 2022, he won the Bathurst 1000 with Garth Tander. This was the last race for Holden cars after the manufacturer closed. He won his third Bathurst 1000 in 2023 with Richie Stanaway.
GT Racing Adventures
Shane van Gisbergen started GT racing through his connections with Tekno Autosports. In 2015, he joined the Blancpain Endurance Series. He drove a McLaren 650S GT3. He missed one race due to his V8 Supercars schedule. However, he still won two of the four races he entered.
For the 2016 season, he moved to McLaren's new Garage 59 team. He won the 2016 season with Côme Ledogar and Rob Bell. They won the 3 Hours of Monza and the 1000 km Paul Ricard races.
At the 2016 Bathurst 12 Hour, he drove a McLaren 650S GT3. He set the fastest ever lap at the Mount Panorama Circuit to get pole position. He then set the fastest race lap and won the race with Álvaro Parente and Jonathon Webb.
NASCAR Career
2023 Season Highlights
On May 18, 2023, it was announced that van Gisbergen would race in the NASCAR Cup Series. He drove the No. 91 Chevrolet for Trackhouse Racing at the first-ever Chicago Street Course race. He started 3rd in the race. Van Gisbergen took the lead on lap 71 and held it. He won the race, becoming the seventh driver to win in their Cup Series debut. He was the first to do so in the modern era of NASCAR. He also became the first New Zealander to win a Cup Series race. He is now the winningest non-American driver in the Cup Series.
On July 19, 2023, Trackhouse Racing announced he would race again. He competed at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course. He finished in the Top 10 for his second straight race. This made him the first driver since Terry Labonte in 1978 to start a Cup career with two Top 10 finishes in their first two races.
On August 2, 2023, it was announced that van Gisbergen would make his NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and NASCAR oval debut. He raced in the 2023 TSport 200 at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park. He drove the No. 41 for Niece Motorsports and finished 19th. On September 14, 2023, Trackhouse announced that van Gisbergen would race part-time in all three NASCAR national series in 2024.
2024 Season Overview
On December 13, 2023, Kaulig Racing announced that van Gisbergen would race full-time in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. He drove the No. 97 car. He also had to race in the ARCA series at Daytona to be approved for superspeedway events. He started the Xfinity season with a 12th-place finish at Daytona. He earned his first two Xfinity Series wins in back-to-back weeks. These wins were at Portland and Sonoma. He then took his third win of the season at Chicago. Unfortunately, SVG was knocked out of the first round of the Xfinity Series playoffs.
Van Gisbergen also raced in some Cup Series events in 2024 for Kaulig Racing. At the Watkins Glen race, he led with one lap to go but finished second. At the Charlotte Roval, he earned his first career Cup Series pole position. He led 21 laps and finished 7th. He competed in 12 Cup Series races that year. He scored one top-five and two top-ten finishes, along with one pole.
2025 Season Progress
On August 24, 2024, it was announced that van Gisbergen would race full-time in the Cup Series for Trackhouse Racing in 2025. He drives the No. 88 Chevrolet. He started the 2025 season with a 33rd-place finish at the Daytona 500. He had a tough start to the regular season, with only one top-10 finish in the first 15 races.
Despite these challenges, van Gisbergen won a race and earned a playoff spot at Mexico City. He won by a large margin of 16 seconds. Three weeks later, he continued his strong performance on road courses. He won again at Chicago. This made him the winningest non-American driver in the Cup Series. He also became the second driver to win both the Xfinity and Cup races from pole position in one weekend. The following week, he won at Sonoma. He also took pole position for both the Xfinity and Cup races there. His third win of the season tied him with Tony Stewart and Jimmie Johnson for most wins in a rookie Cup Series season.
On January 10, 2025, it was announced that van Gisbergen would race part-time in the Xfinity Series. He drives the No. 9 for JR Motorsports. In his first race for the team, he won at the Chicago street course. He held off his teammate Connor Zilisch for the win. The next week at Sonoma, he battled Zilisch again and finished second.
