Shane Robert van Gisbergen (born May 9, 1989), also known as SVG, is a professional racing driver from New Zealand. He races full-time in the NASCAR Cup Series for Trackhouse Racing. He also races part-time in the NASCAR Xfinity Series for JR Motorsports.
Before joining NASCAR, Shane was famous for racing in the Supercars Championship. He drove the No. 97 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 for Triple Eight Race Engineering. He won the Supercars Championship three times: in 2016, 2021, and 2022. He is 4th on the all-time wins list in Supercars with 80 wins. He has also won the famous Bathurst 1000 race three times: in 2020, 2022, and 2023.
Shane also competes in GT Racing. He won the 2016 Liqui Moly Bathurst 12 Hour and the 2016 Blancpain GT Series Endurance Cup. He also finished second in the 2015 24 Hours of Daytona in the GTD class.
In 2023, he made an amazing debut in the NASCAR Cup Series. He won the 2023 Grant Park 220 in Chicago. This made him the first driver since 1963 to win in their very first NASCAR Cup Series race. He was also the first New Zealander to win a Cup Series race. Shane van Gisbergen and Paul Morris are the only drivers to have won all three major races at Mount Panorama. These are the Bathurst 1000, Bathurst 6 Hour, and Bathurst 12 Hour.

Early Racing Days in New Zealand
Shane van Gisbergen started racing at a young age. From 1998 to 2004, he competed in Motocross, Quarter Midgets, and karts. He showed great talent early on.
In 2004 and 2005, he finished third in the New Zealand Formula First Championship. He also won the Rookie of the Year award that season. The next year, in 2005 and 2006, he won the New Zealand Formula Ford Championship. He earned another Rookie of the Year title. In 2006 and 2007, he finished second in the Toyota Racing Series.
In 2014, Shane won the BNT NZ Supertourers Hankook Super Series championship. He raced with Simon Evans. Shane won 7 out of 9 races in the Endurance rounds. This included winning all races at the Fuchs 500 weekend.
In 2021, Shane won the New Zealand Grand Prix. This event is usually for drivers from all over the world. But due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was only for New Zealand drivers. Shane entered as a special guest and won.
Supercars Championship Success
Shane van Gisbergen began his Supercars career in 2007. He was the 200th driver to start a V8 Supercar race. This happened at the Jim Beam 400 at Oran Park Raceway. After impressing in 2007, he joined Stone Brothers Racing in 2008. He raced with them for five seasons. His best finish was fourth in the championship in 2011.
In 2013, Shane moved to Tekno Autosports. This move was very successful. He finished second in the championship in 2014.
Shane has also performed well at the famous Bathurst 1000 race. In 2009, he was leading the race but had a long pit stop. This made him lose many positions. A similar problem happened in the 2014 race. With only 10 laps left, his car stalled and would not restart. This cost him a likely victory, and he finished 16th. He had started the 2014 race from pole position, which was his first at the event.

In 2016, Shane joined the Triple Eight Race Engineering team. He raced alongside successful drivers Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes. Shane won his first race for the team at the Tasmania SuperSprint in 2016. Alexandre Prémat was his co-driver for the Enduro Cup. They won the 2016 Enduro Cup. They also became the first non-Australian drivers to win. At Pukekohe, Shane was the first New Zealander to win the Jason Richards trophy. He won eight races that season and became the champion.
In 2017, Shane and Jamie Whincup raced together again. Shane started his title defense with two wins in Adelaide. But he finished 4th in the championship that year.
In 2018, Shane won both races in Adelaide. He drove a Holden Commodore ZB. He also won at Townsville and the Sydney SuperNight 300. At Tailem Bend, he dominated the first race at The Bend Motorsport Park. He led almost from start to finish. At Sandown, he finished 2nd with Earl Bamber.
In 2022, Shane won the 2022 Bathurst 1000 with Garth Tander. This was the last race for Holden cars. He won his third Bathurst 1000 in 2023 with Richie Stanaway.
GT Racing Adventures
Shane van Gisbergen also races in GT (Grand Touring) cars. In 2015, he raced in the Blancpain Endurance Series. He drove a McLaren 650S GT3. He won two races that year.
In 2016, he joined McLaren's new Garage 59 team. He won the 2016 season with Côme Ledogar and Rob Bell. They won the 3 Hours of Monza and the 1000 km Paul Ricard races.
At the 2016 Bathurst 12 Hour, Shane set the fastest ever lap at the Mount Panorama Circuit. He won the race with Álvaro Parente and Jonathon Webb.
NASCAR Journey
On May 18, 2023, it was announced that Shane would race in the NASCAR Cup Series. He drove the No. 91 Chevrolet for Trackhouse Racing. His first race was the 2023 Grant Park 220 at the Chicago Street Course. He started the race in 3rd place. Shane took the lead on lap 71 and won the race. This was a historic win. He became the first driver in the modern era of NASCAR to win in their debut race. He was also the first New Zealander to win a Cup Series race.
On July 19, 2023, Trackhouse Racing announced Shane would race again. He competed at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course. He finished in the top 10 for his second race. This made him the first driver since 1978 to start a NASCAR Cup career with two top 10 finishes in their first two races.
On August 2, 2023, Shane also made his debut in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. He raced on an oval track for the first time. He drove the No. 41 for Niece Motorsports at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park. He finished 19th.
In 2024, Shane competed full-time in the NASCAR Xfinity Series for Kaulig Racing. He drove the No. 97 car. He won his first two Xfinity Series races back-to-back. These wins were at Portland and Sonoma. He then took his third win of the season at Chicago.
On August 24, 2024, it was announced that Shane will race full-time in the Cup Series in 2025. He will drive the No. 88 Chevrolet for Trackhouse Racing. In 2024, he also raced in some Cup Series events for Kaulig Racing. At the Watkins Glen race, he finished second. At the Charlotte Roval, he earned his first Cup Series pole position. He led 21 laps and finished 7th.
