Garth Dirk Tander (born 31 March 1977) is a famous Australian race car driver. He has won many championships and is known for his amazing skills on the track. Garth is a co-driver for Grove Racing in the Enduro Cup of the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship. He won the main championship in 2007 with the HSV Dealer Team. He is also a six-time winner of Australia's biggest race, the Bathurst 1000. Garth also has his own racing team called TanderSport.

Garth's Early Racing Days

Garth started racing go-karts when he was a kid at the Tiger Kart Club in Western Australia. He was very good! By the time he was 17, he had won 7 state championships and one Australian championship. In 1997, Garth became the Australian Formula Ford champion. After that, he got a chance to drive a V8 Supercar for Garry Rogers Motorsport in 1998. This was a big step in his racing career!

Professional Racing Career

Starting with Garry Rogers Motorsport

Garth Tander quickly showed his talent in V8 Supercars. In 2000, he finished second in the championship. He also won the famous Bathurst 1000 race that year with his teammate Jason Bargwanna. He also won the first-ever Bathurst 24 Hour race in 2002. He drove a special Holden Monaro 427C with Steven Richards, Cameron McConville, and Nathan Pretty. The next year, in 2003, he finished a very close second in the same race. He was only 0.2 seconds behind the winner! After the 2004 season, Garth decided to move to a new team. He joined the HSV Dealer Team in 2005.

Joining the HSV Dealer Team

Garth joined the HSV Dealer Team in 2005. He had a strong season in 2006, even leading the championship for a while. However, some tough races and car problems meant he didn't win the title that year. But 2007 was his year! Garth raced the #16 Toll HSV Commodore. He won many races, including all three races at Barbagallo Raceway in his home state. He also won all three races at Queensland Raceway. Garth Tander won the 2007 V8 Supercars Championship! It was a very close finish, with him winning by just two points. His team, Toll HSV Dealer Team, also won the teams' championship.

Driving for Holden Racing Team

In 2008, Garth moved to the Holden Racing Team. He had a great start, winning races in New Zealand and at Winton. He and his teammate Mark Skaife also won an endurance race at Phillip Island. Garth won the Bathurst 1000 two more times with this team. He won in 2009 with Will Davison and again in 2011 with Nick Percat. In 2013, new cars called "Car of the Future" were introduced. Garth continued to race well, getting five podium finishes and winning races at Townsville and Phillip Island. In 2015, he won the Enduro Cup with Warren Luff. In 2016, during the Bathurst 1000, Garth was involved in an incident with another driver, Jamie Whincup, which ended his race early.

Returning to Garry Rogers Motorsport

Garth went back to Garry Rogers Motorsport for the 2017 and 2018 seasons.

Racing with Triple Eight Race Engineering

After leaving GRM, Garth became a co-driver for Triple Eight Race Engineering. He teamed up with Shane van Gisbergen for the longer endurance races. Together, they won the Bathurst 1000 in 2020 and again in 2022!

Driving for Grove Racing

For the 2023 endurance races, Garth Tander joined Grove Racing. This was exciting because it was his first time driving a Ford car in the Supercars Championship! In 2023, he raced with David Reynolds. In 2024, he partnered with Matthew Payne. They continued to race together in 2025 and won the 2025 Bathurst 1000 in an exciting race affected by rain.

Garth's Life Outside Racing

Garth Tander is a father to two children, Scarlet and Sebastian.
