Garth Dirk Tander (born 31 March 1977) is a famous Australian racing driver. He has won many championships. He currently races in the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship's Enduro Cup. He is a co-driver for Grove Racing.

Garth won the Supercars championship in 2007 with the HSV Dealer Team. He has also won Australia's biggest race, the Bathurst 1000, five times! He even owns his own racing team called TanderSport.

Garth Tander's Early Racing Days

Garth started racing go-karts when he was a kid in Western Australia. By the time he was 17, he had won 7 state titles. He also won one Australian karting title.

In 1997, Garth became the Australian Formula Ford champion. This was a big step in his career.

He couldn't find enough money to race in Formula Holden in 1998. But then, Garry Rogers Motorsport offered him a spot. He got to drive one of their V8 Supercars.

Garth Tander's Professional Career

Racing with Garry Rogers Motorsport

In the 2000 championship, Garth finished second. He almost won the title. But Mark Skaife, a five-time champion, beat him in the final race.

Garth won the famous Bathurst 1000 race in 2000. He shared the win with Jason Bargwanna. After that big win, he didn't have as much success for a while.

Garth also won the first-ever Bathurst 24-hour race. He drove a special Holden Monaro 427C. This car had a bigger engine than the regular road car. His co-drivers were Steven Richards, Cameron McConville, and Nathan Pretty. They raced for Garry Rogers Motorsport.

In the 2003 Bathurst 24 Hour, Garth raced the same Monaro. He finished second, just 0.2 seconds behind the winning car. He even set the fastest lap of the race.

In 2004, Garth stayed with Garry Rogers Motorsport. But he announced he would leave the team in 2005. His year started tough, but he improved. He finished 11th in the championship. In November 2004, Garth signed a three-year deal. He would move to the HSV Dealer Team in 2005.

Success with HSV Dealer Team

In 2005, Garth joined the HSV Dealer Team. His teammate was Rick Kelly, who had won Bathurst twice.

Garth was leading the championship in 2006. But a bad race at Oran Park made him lose the lead. The longer endurance races were also tough. At Sandown, Garth and co-driver Mark Skaife were set to win. But a broken steering problem stopped them. At Bathurst, his car's clutch failed at the start. Another car hit him, ending his race early. Garth was very disappointed. He knew his chance at the championship was almost gone.

For the second year in a row, Garth won the Symmons Plains round. He won two of the three races. His car even had engine trouble, running on only seven cylinders.

In 2007, Garth raced the #16 Toll HSV Commodore. He won the second round in his home state, Western Australia. He won all three races there. He did the same at Queensland Raceway. This helped him take the points lead from his teammate, Rick Kelly.

Later in the season, Garth had a problem at Bathurst. Brake issues forced him to stop racing. But at Surfers Paradise and Bahrain, he scored good points. This helped him get the championship lead back from Jamie Whincup.

Garth Tander won the 2007 V8 Supercars Championship! He won by just two points over Jamie Whincup. Craig Lowndes was third, and Rick Kelly was fourth. All four drivers could have won the title in the final race. Garth's win at Philip Island also helped Holden win the manufacturers' title. His team, Toll HSV Dealer Team, won the teams' championship.

Moving to Holden Racing Team

In 2008, Garth moved to the Holden Racing Team. He had a tough start to the season. But he won his first round in New Zealand. His second win came at Winton in July. Garth and his teammate Mark Skaife won the first endurance race at Philip Island. Garth looked strong at the Bathurst 1000. But a slipping clutch hurt his chances. His co-driver Mark Skaife later crashed, ending their race.

Garth finished third in the 2008 V8 Supercars Championship. He won the Bathurst 1000 twice more. He won in 2009 with Will Davison. He also won in 2011 with Nick Percat.

In 2013, new cars called "Car of the Future" were introduced. The Holden Racing Team started using the newer VF Commodore. Garth had some wins but was not always consistent. He finished on the podium five times. He won races at Townsville and Phillip Island. He ended the 2013 Championship in 8th place. In 2015, Garth won the Enduro Cup with Warren Luff. They didn't win any of the endurance races that year, but they scored enough points.

In 2016, Garth was upset after a crash at the Bathurst 1000. He blamed Jamie Whincup for a "desperate" move. This move caused Garth to crash into the wall. It ended his hopes for the race.

Joining Triple Eight Race Engineering

Garth went back to Garry Rogers Motorsport in 2017. He raced with them for two years. But then, he was unexpectedly let go before the 2019 season. Without a full-time spot, he joined Triple Eight Race Engineering. He became a co-driver for their endurance races.

Garth Tander's Personal Life

Garth was married to Leanne from 2004 to 2022. He has two children, Scarlet and Sebastian.
