List of Formula One World Constructors' Champions facts for kids
Formula One, often called F1, is the top level of open-wheeled car racing. It's set by rules from the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), which is the main group for motorsport around the world. The word "formula" means the special rules that all teams and cars must follow.
An F1 season has many races, called Grands Prix. These races usually happen on special tracks built for racing. Sometimes, they even take place on closed city streets. The World Constructors' Championship is a big award given by the FIA. It goes to the best F1 constructor (team that builds the car) each season. Teams earn points based on how their drivers do in each Grand Prix. These points are added up to find the champion.
From 1958 to 1978, only the highest-scoring driver from each team added points to the championship. But since 1979, points from all cars entered by a team count towards their total. A team wins the Constructors' Championship when no other team can catch their points total, no matter what happens in the last races. The official award is given at the FIA Prize Giving Ceremony after the season ends.
The Constructors' Championship was first given out in 1958 to Vanwall. Back then, it was called the International Cup for Formula One Manufacturers. In 1981, its name officially changed to the World Constructors' Championship. The name of a constructor includes both the car's chassis (the main body) and its engine maker.
Out of 170 teams that have raced in an F1 Grand Prix, only 15 have won this championship in its 63 seasons. Ferrari has won the most titles, with 16 championships. Williams is next with nine wins. McLaren and Mercedes are tied for third with eight titles each.
Ferrari has also won the most championships as an engine maker, with 16 titles. After them are Renault (12 titles), Ford (10 titles), Mercedes (10 titles), and Honda (6 titles). Mercedes holds the record for winning the most championships in a row, with eight straight wins from 2014 to 2021.
Almost all championship-winning cars were designed and built in the United Kingdom. Only 17 titles were won by cars from other countries: 16 by Italian-built Ferrari cars and 1 by a French-built Matra car. In eleven seasons, the team that won the Constructors' Championship did not have the driver who won the World Drivers' Championship that year.
All but one title (in 1969 by a Matra car from a private team) have been won by cars from official factory teams. Among drivers who helped their teams win the constructors' title, Lewis Hamilton has contributed to the most, with eight titles, all with Mercedes.
